You know, we wait all year for the holidays and all week to say it’s time to play sports.
SIMON: A World Cup for history and other highlights of the year in sport. And the fridge goes back to football like the whole field. Howard Bryant of Meadowlark Media joins us. Howard, thank you so much for being with us.
HOWARD BRYANT: Good morning, Scott. Merry Christmas. How are you?
SIMON: And merry Christmas to you, my friend. Look, I don’t want to ignore the situation of migrant workers in Qatar, which we’ve talked about and should talk about in the future. But I want to talk about the World Cup as the World Cup. Argentina defeated France on penalties. Was this the best World Cup final ever?
BRYANT: I don’t know, Scott. I can’t go into superlatives because I’m not really a World Cup scholar. I mean, who knows which was the best? ’98 was phenomenal. And I think this one was great. I mean, this was one of the best tournaments I’ve ever seen in any sport…
BRYANT: … Because of the excitement. And that’s why it’s hard to compare them. But I can tell you one thing – there were many, many, many people who won’t watch football for another four years and just savor what they saw here…
BRYANT: …And then go back and watch it again or become a new fan. It was so good.
SIMON: Yes, it certainly was. Lots of great endings and beginnings in 2022. What stands out for you when we look back?
BRYANT: Well, I think to end the year obviously you have to stick with the World Cup. You have Lionel Messi, who has done everything in this sport with Argentina except winning the World Cup. Now he has it. And, of course, you think about the star of this tournament. The winner of the Golden Boot was Kylian Mbappé of France.
BRYANT: Of course, he already has a World Cup. He won (laughs)…
BRYANT: He won four years ago. And then these two really stand out. Obviously, throughout the year, so many stories – particularly in tennis, my sport, just a generation of players retiring…
BRYANT: …You know, from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and del Potro to Petkovic and, of course, the – you know, the big ones at the end, Roger and Serena – very, very hard to say goodbye to that generation. Very happy to finally see, after the great and long journey, his rookie season as a player, Dusty Baker…
BRYANT: …In 1968 with the Atlanta Braves, winning the World Series as a coach after winning it as a player with the Dodgers in 1981. And then, of course, obviously, there’s a Christmas present that I think everyone in America is happy, or at least it should be, that Brittney Griner is home for Christmas, something no one thought would happen when she was convicted in September. Just like – a year she would like to forget ends very well for her.
SIMON: Buffalo, bears and sub-zero temperatures – oh my. The Bills are playing at Soldier Field. I believe the authorities say not to take unnecessary trips. But that doesn’t (laughs) – that doesn’t apply to the Bears game, does it?
BRYANT: They’re out there – I can tell you, Scott – they’re out there playing. And whenever I watch those games — and obviously, you can go back to all the classic games, whether it’s the 1967 Ice Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers and the NFC title game or go to one of the — I think they were the Patriots and Tennessee Titans who played in one of those sub-zero games as well. And you will – and every time I see those games, I say to myself, I’m not a huge fan (laughs). I won’t be the only one out there watching this…
SIMON: To go outside, yes, and watch in sub-zero temperatures.
BRYANT: And the tailgaters, too — and then, of course, there’s always going to be the crowd gunning for the shirtless guy.
BRYANT: I salute you, my friend. But I’ll be home.
