Game one of Saturday’s two-headed game at Madison Square Garden looks set to meet expectations as No. 23 Ohio takes on North Carolina in the ninth annual CBS Sports Classic. UNC No. 1 preseason dropped out of the rankings after four losses in their last six games, including a loss in four games through the end of November and the first part of December, so the odds are very slim here in favor of Ohio State this one.
But the ever resilient Tar Heels are showing signs of life lately with consecutive victories over Georgia Tech and The Citadel for a total of 49 points last week.
For Ohio State, this is a match they can win, but they won’t be able to do so without an intense fight. The Buckeyes have an elite offense to counter UNC’s own prolific scoring attack, but UNC has enough size, skill, and experience not to go quietly. We should be in for quite a feast.
It was a bumpy road for UNC early in the season. No one thought the Tar Heels, who finished first in preseason, would go 7-4 on the CBS Sports Classic and not rank in both the AP and coaching polls. They are exactly like that. And yet UNC – finally – is showing signs of life lately as its team comes together. He now has top 10 tackles in adjusted KenPom efficiency, he’s taken much better care of the ball lately and – most importantly – his stars are playing like stars. The great man Armando Bacot has recorded a double-double in each of his last four appearances; Caleb Love’s 34-point explosion against Alabama in late November seems to have boosted his confidence; and RJ Davis has improved as a shooter, distributor, and talent raiser for those around him.
Talent on the Ohio State roster has never been an issue as long as Chris Holtmann is at Columbus. But the leaders of this team in production just over a month into the season were something of a surprise. Zed Key was the fourth leading scorer of the season last year and now leads the Buckeyes in this category with an average of 14.3 points per game. This is not a big surprise after scoring starting minutes for most of last season and averaging 7.8 points per game over the course of the year. Brice Sensabaugh’s escape is a real surprise here. He was a four-star recruit well outside the top 50 in the country, and he grew up to be a potential candidate for anything. Sensabaugh is second on the team averaging 14.1 points per game and has been the team’s most consistent outside threat to date.
