Support for women’s sports is growing. Nielsen reports that global sponsorship increased 146% from 2020 to 2021. The country’s second sports bar dedicated to women’s sports has now opened in Seattle.
For the Seattle Majestics, a women’s tackle football team, having a dedicated space like this is huge. Part of the growing women’s sport is the growing audience. And for that, fans need to be able to see them.
Therefore the opening of the Rough & The crash in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood means so much to the Majestics players. The team has been around for 20 years and they have a track record of success. Still, most people don’t know they exist.
Sydney Holt has played with the team for seven seasons. At Rough & On the opening night of Tumble, she spoke to her teammates about how they always try to advance women’s football. Holt coaches football at Kent-Meridian High School. She hopes this new women’s sports bar can give the Majestics more visibility.
“Having a facility that puts our shirts on the wall, that’s broadcasting our games live… it’s all so important to the growth of women’s football,” Holt said.
Holt’s teammate Catherine Vogt was surprised not only by the sports bar itself, but also by the warm welcome she received from the community.
“It was incredible how many people are interested in spaces like this,” said Vogt.
“It really felt like going home. It felt like I was entering a place that had people who understood me, that would celebrate what our teams were doing and that would celebrate where women in sport were going.”
Coarse & Tumble plans to show the Majestics games when their season begins in April. Other local women’s teams are also looking forward to showing their games at the bar.
Seattle’s NWSL team OL Reign works with Rough & Tumble owner Jen Barnes to find out how they can work together. OL Reign marketing manager Robin Anderson is hoping they can host away game watch parties at the pub.
The demand for a place showing women’s sports was on Rough & Tumble’s first day of business. You had to wait for hours for most of the night to get in. Cat Morazano attended with some people she plays soccer with. She recalled struggling to find a place to watch a big OL Reign game.
“I got so much backlash when I asked them to play the game and I think that’s crazy and it was a regular sports bar!” Morazano said.
“So I think it’s really cool that there’s a place where you don’t have to feel bad to ask for a women’s sports game, they just have it on the screen.”
Rough & Tumble welcomes all sports fans, including those under 9-10pm, and also those looking to watch men’s sports.
