METHODOLOGY
Forbes’ 2022 list of the most valuable sports organizations includes the organizations with the largest presence in North America, ranked by the estimated amount of commissions they can generate from the contracts they manage. Unlike other previous editions of the list, this ranking does not include firms that do most of their business in Europe, either football-focused organizations such as Gestifute or marketing-focused organizations such as TEAM8 (based in Ohio but has its own contracts under management related to Roger Federer). However, overseas divisions of standard centers are included in their contract and customer estimates. Uena Pele, headquartered in Spain, has been added to its lineup by virtue of its 2020 merger with Virginia-based Tandem Sports and Entertainment.
This list focuses on playing and marketing contracts for clients in all club sports in the major leagues (including sports with limited presence in North America, such as cricket and rugby). The list also focuses on marketing contracts for clients in individual sports, such as golf and tennis, as well as retired clients. In addition to contracts, non-playing contract clauses include coaches’ and players’ contracts, sports information and athlete information agreements. All figures reflect individual talent only; Divisions of organizations that represent brands or sports properties such as leagues and teams are not included. Buyers from outside the world of sports are also excluded for the benefit of organizations with entertainment divisions, such as CAA and WME.
Contract values represent estimates of the total value of all active contracts under management, including amounts already paid and amounts yet to be paid. To calculate commissions for playing contracts, Forbes increased the value of the contract by the maximum attorney fee allowed by the league’s players union (3% in the NFL, 4% in the NBA and NHL, 5% in the MLB) or by total commission. rate in cases where there is not a large number (such as 10% in European football and basketball). In golf and tennis, agents typically do not receive commissions from their clients’ winnings; for those athletes, only endorsement contracts appear in the situation. Forbes takes a 20% commission rate on licensing contracts, and lower rates on other types of non-playable contracts based on industry standards.
All numbers are Forbes estimates as of July 2022, compiled through interviews with industry insiders and with the help of public reports and databases such as Spotrac, Inside the League, PuckPedia, CapFriendly and Capology. Forbes’ full contract estimates are rounded to the nearest $10 million while high commission estimates are rounded to the nearest $1 million. Other customers and contract figures that could not be independently verified were excluded.
