Next month’s World Cup is one of the most controversial ever because of the human rights record of host nation Qatar, but Americans won’t know that while watching the games.
What they’re saying: Fox Sports executive producer David Neal told the Philadelphia Inquirer that its World Cup coverage will focus exclusively on soccer.
Background: Since winning this bid in 2010, Qatar has been under the microscope for human rights abuses and the abuse of migrant workers.
Situation: Not everyone takes the same “stick to football” approach. Some European cities will not screen matches in public places, Denmark will make a statement with their jerseys and all nine European captains plan to wear rainbow armbands in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
