MIDLAND — Carter Ryan and Taylor Burgermeister made history over the weekend.

Two sophomores earned Bedford’s first doubles match point in a state final in school history.

They beat Alex Li and William Richart of White Lake Lakeland 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Ryan and Burgermeister had the misfortune of facing Midland Dow top seeds Roofy Elsaadany and Aiden Tanis in the second round, losing 6-0, 6-0.

All other Bedford players lost in the first round, but Jaxon Nejedlik won his first set at No. 2 singles against No. 5, and Zach Wise and Mason Charlton had a great battle at No. 3 doubles.

“We had six freshmen on this year’s team,” said Bedford coach Eric Cukierski, who was named the region’s coach of the year by his peers after the Mules’ performance at the Regional. “We’re going to end this year’s team with eight, so we’re going to start building right away for next season.”

He shot 101 on Friday and 103 on Saturday to finish 78th out of 107 golfers.

“Elaina had a fantastic season,” Bedford coach Brad Reed said.

Carlson places 18th

EAST LANSING — Gibraltar Carlson shot a 916 in the Division 2 state finals at Michigan State University Forest Akers West on Friday and Saturday.

Junior Anika Irwin led the Marauders with a 217. Rounding out the Carlson scores were Brooklyn DesJardins 228, Andria Konczal 233, Madison Cooper 243 and Madilyn Peterson 248.

Callie Calvin of Jefferson finished with a lap of 214, which tied for 78th overall.

Hoffman improves

ALLENDALE — Summerfield’s Delaney Hoffman dropped her opening day score by 10 strokes Saturday in the Division 4 state final.

His two-day total of 208 was good for 56th.

SMCC wins trophy

WAYNE – St. Mary Catholic Central played second in the six-team field at the Wayne Memorial Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

“It was a tough two-day meet that pushed the girls to the limit,” SMCC coach Gretchn Bylow said. “They rose to the challenge and the results were brilliant.”

The Kestrels recorded 17 personal bests.

Monika Burkardt won the 200 and 500 freestyles and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay with Mary Claire Wright, Kaylee Kamprath and Maya Zaleski.

McKenzie Kidd was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the breaststroke. Other strong performances came from Catherine Ambs, Sunny Duran, Isabelle Niedermeyer, Katelyn Rutkowski and Brigeta Yakoo.

Dundee wins two

DETROIT – Dundee tallied seven personal bests Saturday as it beat Detroit Cass Tech and Western International to push its record to 13-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

Huron boys third

DEXTER — The New Boston Huron boys scored 136 points to finish third behind Pinckney (35) and Chelsea (46) in the high school division of the Gabriel Richard Invitational in Ann Arbor.

Ryan Morris led Huron in 12th. Teammates Griffin Mentzer, Abdul Ghenewa and Luke Dulecki ran 23-26-47.

Keegan Masters and Elliott Rodgers were 14th and 30th respectively for ninth-placed Whiteford (259).

Huron’s Molly Johnston finished 10th in the girls event and Avery Turk finished 15th, helping her team finish sixth. Emily Rasor led Whiteford.

PREP SOCCER

State Line keeps winning

NOTEWORTHY – Trevin Johnson’s first-half free kick goal proved to be the difference as State Line Christian beat Troy Bethany Christian 1-0 on Friday.

It was Johnson’s 17th goal of the season.

Goaltender Eli Dyer recorded his fifth shutout of the season as the Patriots improved to 12-6 with their fifth straight win.

CYO SOCCER

St. Joseph triumphs

Katelyn Boberg had two goals and David Sweeney had one goal as Erie St. Joseph defeated Holy Ghost 3-2 to finish the regular season 6-4.

Thomas Snow had an assist and Dominic Imbrogno played well in goal.
