Coming off a championship in his rookie season, Jonathan Kuminga is ready to step into a bigger role with the Warriors.
Although ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith doubted his ability to do so, Kunminga’s teammate and NBA legend Andre Iguodala noticed the work Kuminga was putting in.
“My young man, I’m on his head,” Iguodala said on the “Point Forward” podcast on Friday. “He’s taken some licks off Stephen A. I don’t know how he’s guaranteed because I’ve heard he’s been doing what he’s supposed to be doing this summer.”
Kuminga kept the momentum going throughout the season.
From the NBA summer league to take his experience to play with his country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the FIBA World Cup.
And while the 19-year-old continues to make headlines around the world, his performance this season has drawn recent criticism from Smith.
Speaking to Kuminga’s young core, Moses Moody and James Wiseman last week, Smith discussed his biggest concerns with Kuminga.
“I’m telling you right now, I think Moody and Wiseman are going to be important,” Smith began. “I’m worried about Kuminga. I’m hearing a lot of things about him off the court in terms of his head, his lack of discipline, you understand? Some of the stupidity. I’m not going into his personal business, I’m not saying anything. one.
“I’m talking about attitude, not actions. I’m talking about attitude, level of focus, commitment, determination, just put your head down and get the job done. I’m hearing that he’s changing the fighters about that, and he has to be together. I am analyzing because I am a fan of Jonathan Kuminga.
While playing against Congo DR, it was clear that Kuminga was the best player on the ground. But the team was unable to translate Kuminga’s individual achievements into victories.
Still, Kuminga was recording game-high points and was effective throughout.
“I just saw some incredible tape of him playing for his country,” Iguodala said. “He’s out there now playing international games. Kuminga is busy. I mean fastbreak, reverse, pull-ups, he’s in the bag. ISOs, getting, making shots. But every clip, they’re down. 20, 25.”

Of course, basketball is a team game, but Kuminga’s progress and continued development will be important to the Warriors in October.
