NEW BOSTON – The New Boston Huron football team served both the present and the future with Wednesday’s 8-0 win over Southgate Anderson in the opening round of the Division 2 district that hosts Huron.

The present is that Huron advances to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Monday to face Gibraltar Carlson.

The future is that freshmen and sophomores accounted for almost all of the scoring.

Freshmen Ian Petrick and Jordan Stasak each scored two goals with Petrick notching two assists and Stasak one. Sophomores Landon Julio and Aidan Dolencic each scored a goal and Julio also had an assist.

Senior Abdul Ahmad added a goal and junior Sebastian Horvath contributed an assist.

Southgate helped Huron with an own goal.

“This is Huron’s eighth shutout (of the season),” Huron coach Matt Lividini said. “The Chiefs back line, led by senior captain Drew Slane, aided Bradley Hughes‘ success in tallying eight goals.”

Ostrowski lifts Carlson

GIBRALTAR – Kyler Ostrowski had a goal and three assists to lead Gibraltar Carlson to a 5-0 victory over Trenton in a Division 2 district game on Wednesday.

Brady Jaskula made six saves to record the shutout with seniors Malec, Aiden Dietz and Nic Valadez leading the defense along with freshman Caiden Fenech.

Carlson has a 13-6-1 record heading into Monday’s district semifinal against host New Boston Huron.

“We played them the first game of the season and it was a 0-0 tie,” Carlson coach Mario Parody said. “We have mutual respect”

Flat Rock bows out

GROSSE ILE – Grosse Ile, which has played in the state finals in each of the past three seasons and won titles in 2019 and 2020, was too much for Flat Rock on Wednesday.

Flat Rock completes its season with a 3-16-3 record. Grosse Ile will play Milan in the District semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Airport’s season ends

Airport hosts Ypsilanti in a Division 2 District Tournament game on Wednesday.

Airport ends its first season under coach Goran Cepo with a 7-12-1 record.

Brandon McComas, who led the team with 18 goals, is one of only three seniors on the Airport staff. The others are Jaiden Nason and Dillon Yoas. Eight starters will return next season.

“The future looks bright for the Jets,” Cepo said. “This was a very young group with 14 varsity freshmen, many of whom started and played 80 minutes in most games. The key will be their development in the offseason.”

Ypsilanti will face No. 1 seed Riverview in the District semifinals. This match will be played at 5:30 p.m. Monday at New Boston Huron.

Costlow fills stat sheet

RIVERVIEW – Jessica Costlow had 16 kills, 12 digs, 3 aces and 2 assists to lead St. Mary Catholic Central (25-4 overall, 9-0 in the Huron League) by a 25-13, 25-15, 25-14. win over Riverview on Wednesday.

Mackenzie Niedermeyer recorded 27 assists, and Mckenna Payne and Raelyn Turner led the defense with 16 and 9 digs, respectively. Madeline Dettilng added 9 kills and Molly Blanchett 6. Top blockers were Lauren Conant with 3 and Blanchett with 2.

Milan holds off Jets

MILAN – “We beat Airport in three, but it wasn’t easy,” Milan coach Kathy Bradshaw said after a 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 win over the Jets in the Tournament of Huron League Wednesday.

“The airport has improved a lot since we played them a week ago. They were very wayward and it was difficult for us to keep the ball.”

Sophomore Lauryn Parris stepped up on Milan’s service line. He scored 5 aces and delivered a key stretch of points in the third set. Other statistical leaders for the 16-3-6 Big Reds were Sylvia Koch (12 kills), Amanda Gregorio (18 digs) and Madison Slack (24 assists, 3 blocks).

Airport got 8 kills each from RaeAnn Drummond and Renee Shrewsbury, 17 assists and 12 assists from Joelle Shrewsbury, and 14 assists from Peyton Zajac.

Huron takes down Bears

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron rallied for tight wins in the first and third sets to beat Jefferson 25-22, 25-14, 26-24 in the Huron League Tournament on Wednesday.

Quinn Drysdale collected 8 kills and 11 assists, Ellen Town 5 kills and 6 kills, Erin Newman 6 kills, Gabby Cumbo 9 kills, 8 digs and 8 assists, Miranda Jasinski 5 kills and Allison Hollingshead 14 kills.

“Our back row did really well, they put in the work tonight,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “They made some really big plays tonight. We played a lot in the first and third game. We fell short.”

Lindsey Gennoe (15 digs, 2 aces), Clare Boggs (18 digs), Gracie Jones (7 kills) and Anna Boggs (7 digs) led Jefferson.

ADULT SOCCER

Old Crows triumph

Ricky Sheardown and Travis Campbell each scored two goals to lead the Old Crows (1-1) to a 6-3 win over Deportivo Monroe in the Monroe Indoor Coed Fall Soccer League at LevelUp Training on Sunday.

The Crean Team defeated Athletic Monroe 8-4.
