Sam Spinale went to the races. After completing an internship in the U.S. for racing cars at Charlotte Motor Speedway, his passion and dedication to the sport has grown.
Spinale, who is in his senior year at OHIO, is pursuing a degree in journalism, news and information, with a minor certificate in sports management and social media. He spent this summer working in Charlotte, North Carolina as a commercial salesman for a car dealership.
He said: “It was the best experience of my life.” “I want to work in racing, so getting this training was great.”
His experience was equally positive on and off the track: “One thing I loved about my training was that every day was different,” he said. “Basically no two days were the same.”
Spinale explained that his work with Charlotte Motor Speedway has allowed him to see the sport from a different perspective and understand the negotiations and sponsorships that go into what happens at the track.
He explained: “This internship was very useful for me, because it allowed me to see a side of the game that I had never seen before.” “Both sales and customer support was something I really wanted to learn because it’s so important but I didn’t have the opportunity. This really helped me see how much goes into the support side. of race, and how much communication enters into it.”
Spinale and his teammates were responsible for planning most of the Summer Shootout, a series of low-level races that take place in June.
“Our biggest role was to give feedback on fan engagement and sponsorship activity. The staff put all our effort into it, and that was really our part. it’s the biggest in the summer,” Spinale said.
Another major event he has attended is the Coca Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest running race.
As his training comes to an end, Spinale remembers one of the final moments with his teammates as they completed the last race they worked on.
He said: “My best memory was in the last week of training, after the last race we did. For whatever reason, it was just kind of cold because it was the end, but it was really fun. That was really the best time.”
The native Clevelander has always loved sports and knew it would play a role in his career.
He says: “I have always loved sports, and I knew I wanted to work in sports, then racing became what I loved the most and that is what saved me,” he said. I like to talk about them [racing cars] more than I think I would like to drive them.
In a sports management course he took at OHIO, Spinale was introduced to a guest speaker for the team. This connection is what helped him maintain his training, and he continued to grow his network throughout his time on the fast track.
“It’s allowed me to make tons of new connections, which is great. The people I’ve met are so kind and willing to help now with anything I need. I think that’s they were the best part,” he admitted.
Spinale’s roots in racing go back to 2016. After attending a race with his stepfather, he was taken up with the sport.
Spinale said: “My stepfather got me into it. “I didn’t really understand it until I went to the race in June 2016. I almost got there and I loved it. Everything about it – the vibes of the track, and the people too. The people the people you work with are like family.”
“After going to a lot of races, I knew I wanted to work on it, and the further I went and the deeper I got, the more I wanted to do. It’s been six years now and I’ve done a lot of different things in racing, and I still love it,” Spinale said.
The same enthusiasm for the song that he first heard six years ago is now greater when he left the course. Spinale leaves the experience with a sense of confidence in what he wants to pursue after graduation.
“It’s definitely confirmed that I want to continue working in racing and I hope to move to Charlotte and work in racing, or wherever racing takes me for sure. It helped me confirm that this is 100 percent that I want to do it and it’s a very convincing feeling,” said Spinale.
Hopefully, when he graduates next year, he will, taking the knowledge he gained from OHIO with him.
When asked about the biggest thing he’s taken away from OHIO, Spinale explained: “It’s anything I’ve been able to do physically, like working with my hands.” My favorite classes are where I got real experience. The input is my number one thing I would take away from it. All of these experiences actually took a complete restart. All the campus organizations are so amazing, and so are all the people there. I met so many friends just by participating in the camp.”
He emphasizes the importance of participating in OHIO, and the many opportunities to improve your craft.
Spinale continues to improve his skills by working with OHIO Athletics. He collaborates with sports teams by creating social media and reporting content. He also serves as vice president of digital communications for Scripps PRSSA, a public relations agency. In his spare time, he assists with ESPN3 productions.
Although he will soon be on the road, he will always have a piece of Athens with him wherever he goes.
“You feel like you’re part of a college community,” he said of his college town. “Some colleges don’t feel like they’re too big or downtown, but that’s what I love about OU. You feel like you’re getting the college experience, and I don’t think you can get that anywhere else. or anywhere.”
