Comcast has agreed to sell its majority stake in NBC Sports Washington, a regional sports network that broadcasts local Washington, NBA and NHL matches to Monumental Sports & amp; Game.
Monumental, which invests in sports teams and businesses, has held a 33% stake in the network since 2016. Following an undisclosed deal close, it will take over 67% of Comcast’s position.
NBC Sports Washington has been broadcasting NBA’s Wizards and NHL’s Capitals since 1984, when the network was launched. The canal is available throughout Washington, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia.
As part of the NBCUniversal contract, Comcast said it would continue to help operate the network for up to 18 months.
This move comes as local sports channels come under pressure as consumers continue to opt out of subscriptions to cable and satellite TV packages. The media companies behind these networks have discovered a profitable business that offers a streaming option.
In June, New England Sports Network, a local channel that broadcasts games from Boston‘s Red Sox and Bruins, launched a standalone streaming subscription that costs $ 29.99 per month.
The Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of the largest portfolio of regional sports networks, has started offering streaming in some of its markets and plans to introduce streaming access to all of its channels in the coming months.
Comcast still has several other local sports channels such as NBC Sports Philadelphia. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that it is investigating network sales.
