Every September for 27 years, Bill Miner has been hanging a purple Go Vineyarders banner on the porch of Sports Haven, his Vineyard Haven store. It welcomes every passing car and pedestrian, celebrating the new sports season and riders, many of whom have helped put on uniforms and cleats, socks and shin guards, mouthpieces and helmets.

But this year, in big red letters, the banner says: Store Sale.

In August, Mr. Miner said he had learned that the store’s lease would not be renewed.

“We’re not sure what we’re going to do yet,” Miner said in a recent interview at a store across the street from the main street.

He added that he is in the process of looking for a new location, both for the store and the apartment, because for several years he has been living with his wife and dog in a cottage behind the store.

“I’ve been in the sporting goods industry for a long, long time,” said Miner.

He opened his first store in Medfield in 1977. While vacationing in a vineyard in 1994, he noticed the extensive cycling routes and thought they would be perfect for roller skating, which was a flourishing sport at the time. The next Sports Haven In-Line summer ice skates were born in the pop-up trailer while the Miner family stayed at the old family Webb campsite. In 1996, miners settled in their current location, soon expanding it to include a generally accessible sports offer.

Mr. Miner said he continued to run stores in Medfield and Vineyard for 10 years and then moved to the island full-time in 2006, focusing solely on Sports Haven and raising four children with his wife Caroline.

He quickly became part of the sports community, both in the store and on the pitch with his children.

She fondly remembers the “Michael Jordan” moment for her daughter Heather when she missed the regional high school field hockey team. She later got the chance to play in the summer league of coach Lisa Knight alongside future American Liane Dixon.

Mr. Miner said that the experience Heather gained in taking up the challenge of defending against Mrs. Dixon led to her hitting the high school team the following season and eventually becoming captain of her college team.

A customer appreciation weekend will take place on September 24 and 25.

Inside, the store is a virtual wall of fame, testimony to all the sports teams that Mr Miner has sponsored over the years.

“I met a lot of different people and that was one of the best parts of the job,” he said.

Mr. Miner said he also stepped out from behind the register to become an athlete on the island. He hit the local frisbee league one day in the park, full of college kids in much better shape than he was.

“I watched for half an hour and they started saying” come on, get out “and I thought,” Me? Are you talking to me?'”

He later became involved in organizing the league and always tried to recruit the players he believed were the best runners.

However, even outside of sports, Mr. Miner fell in love with the vineyard.
