Punk’s anger flared during the press conference when he mentioned former friend Cabana. There are rumors that Punk made Cabana move to Ring of Honor, and Punk clearly believes it was due to leaks within the company, possibly from Omega and the Bucks. Punk adamantly refused to be involved in any part of Cabana’s career, and the discussion turned him off.

While he signed all the big decisions, it was never just McMahon behind the scenes controlling everything. Yes, McMahon may have been the one who got the praise and recognition, but the success of WWE under his leadership was the result of many contributions. AEW’s lack of experience in command leadership plays a role in these issues. The company has a top-notch, world-class roster, but very little experience in the front office.
WWE also has a role in all of this. As Khan noted during the press conference, All Out did well commercially, but not to the point where it set any other company’s records. That’s changing, however, as WWE has quickly stepped up its storylines since Levesque took over creative control.
In the shadow of all this are expiring television rights deals for AEW and WWE. Based on their ratings, AEW should be in position to receive a significant increase in their rights fees when the current deal with WarnerBrothers/Discovery expires at the end of 2024. But WarnerMedia has merged with Discovery, Inc. , creating Warner Bros. Discovery, and the market is uncertain about their current strategy, creating question marks about AEW’s future. WWE is also in need of new network rights deals, as the existing deals with NBCUniversal and Fox expire at the end of September in 2024. Weakening AEW while strengthening their brand, no doubt, WWE target.
For AEW, this is the wrong time for chaos. The company needs to strengthen its internal affairs, as the wrestling industry is a more dynamic area with two large companies rather than one strong control.
