The requirement to complete first aid knowledge and skills training will be waived for those with disabilities so more people can become high school sports coaches under legislation signed this week by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The measure still requires schools to have a coach or other staff member present at the sporting event who is certified in CPR training.
“This is an exciting day for New Yorkers who would like to coach high school sports but don’t have the ability to perform CPR and other first aid,” said Sen. Rachel May. “Obviously, the safety of athletes is important; this law maintains high safety standards and allows people with disabilities to officiate in high school sports.”
This law was welcomed by people with disabilities who wanted to coach high school sports. May’s office pointed to Josh Virgil, who was injured in a car accident and was physically unable to perform CPR.
“I would like to thank everyone who helped get this bill started, passed, and officially signed,” he said. “This opens the door for more of us to be able to do what we love. It also shows that anything is possible as long as you believe and don’t take anything for granted.”
