MUNICH, Germany, Aug 17 (Reuters) – Germany is considering buying the Olympic Games, a top official suggested, building on the success of the international event in Munich with nine sports and using multiple venues. built for the 1972 summer Olympics.
The Bavarian capital hosts the European Games from Aug 11 to Aug 21, with huge crowds flocking to, among other places, the Olympic stadium, the Rudi-Sedlmayer hall and the regatta center of the Olympics, to see sports including the Olympic maintstays, cycling, gymnastics and rowing.
“I think you can organize the Olympic Games without everything being on a grand scale,” the president of the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) Thomas Weikert told ARD television. “There is a very good event with nine games and you can see that you can build on it.”

With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) keen to cut costs for host cities, which has scared off many potential buyers, having a guaranteed 50-year legacy is a huge bonus if Germany decides to apply for the 2036 edition.
The DOSB has repeatedly failed to bring the Olympics – summer or winter – back to Germany since 1972.
“We are still thinking about the Olympic Games in Germany – winter or summer. We are still thinking about it but we will start asking the members. We will give a time frame at the next general assembly (DOSB) in December,” Weikert said. said.
The winter Olympics have been rescheduled for 2026, with Italy’s Milan and Cortina D’Ampezzo to host, and Japan’s Sapporo to host in 2030.
Weikert said the DOSB will not nominate a specific city but will create a plan that will need to be followed so that one candidate will ultimately emerge from this local process.
“We will not make the mistake of saying it will be A or B. We will ask a lot and see what happens, if indeed Germany wants the Olympics,” he said.
“…I am sure that the members will look at this well and will follow us in the proposals that we will make.”
Previous Olympic bids or plans for Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Munich or the Rhein-Ruhr region among others came up against strong opposition, with local referendums in some cases ending projects ahead of time.
The main reasons for opposing the German Olympics were the cost, the environmental impact, the limited benefits for the local population and the refusal of the IOC to pay any taxes to the host country of the billions of dollars generated by that event.
Paris will host the 2024 summer Olympics while Los Angeles will host the 2028 edition and Brisbane in Australia the 2032 Games.
