Life moves fast, and so do life-changing events.
The case of Brian Tardif is an example. Two weeks ago, he saw an open Pierson athletic director position and applied. On August 4, Tardif shared the story and interviewed the superintendent of the Sag Harbor Union Free School District and the principals of the high school and elementary school. After two days, they asked for advice. The Sag Harbor School Board appointed him to the position on August 8. The next day was his first day at work.
It all came very quickly.
“I jumped right in,” said Tardif, 32, a former Mattituck High School standout who lives in Southold with his wife, Katherine Moore Tardif.
Tardif had been planning to return to Quincy, Mass., where he teaches health and physical education. That was before he got a phone call from Sag Harbor Superintendent Jeff Nichols, informing him that he had gotten the job, his first as athletic director.
“So, this opened all of a sudden and it was just a dream come true,” Tardif said.
Tardif was a three-sport athlete at Mattituck (Class of 2008) in football, basketball and basketball. Recruited by Monmouth University (NJ) and West Point, he chose the former because he wanted a chance to play baseball after college. After a year at Monmouth, he transferred to LIU Post, where he continued to play basketball as a freshman and earned a degree in health and phys ed.
Tardif worked as a substitute teacher in the Mattituck-Cutchogue and Southold districts for half a year before landing full-time teaching jobs in Lowell, Mass., and then Quincy.
Tardif coached the Mattituck Junior High basketball team, assisted the varsity team, coached the Southold JV girls basketball team and coached softball. In Quincy, he coached high school coed cross country and coed swimming.
Tardif replaces Don McGovern, who served on an interim basis after Eric Bramoff resigned last fall to become Oyster Bay’s athletic director.
How were the first days of the project?
“He’s been very busy,” Tardif said Friday. “It’s been a lot of learning, but I’m looking forward to it. It’s just fun meeting people. Everyone’s been so helpful.”
“I feel like I have a lot of support,” he said. “At least I don’t feel like I’m in this alone.”
On Friday, Tardif already met with a group of ADs at a Section XI meeting and looked at things like filling coaching vacancies, checking the interest level in certain sports and finalizing the schedule. Monday will be the first day for varsity and JV sports activities. Middle school sports begin in early September.
Tardif was lucky in that he didn’t have to worry about South Fork traffic. It will carry ferries connecting Greenport to the Isle of Man and Isle of Man to Sag Harbor. “Two ships and I’m there,” he said.
It seems inevitable that at some point Tardif will cross paths with his younger brother Joe, a former Mattituck sports star (and former SUNY/Cortland basketball player) who coaches and works in the Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District. Joe Tardif is an assistant coach for girls varsity soccer in addition to coaching girls JV basketball and JV basketball.
“It’s funny because I’m sure he’ll be here coaching my teams and I’m sure some of my teams will be there playing against them, so it’s going to be fun to watch and I know my parents are excited to see it. brothers and sisters,” said Brian Tardif. “I’ll wear red Pierson.”
