Instead of paying right-hander Daniel Bard as a trade chip, the Colorado Rockies have signed the closer to a contract extension in last place. The Rockies have signed Bard to a two-year contract worth about $19 million, MLB.com reports. Bard was scheduled to become a free agent after the season.
Colorado is last in the NL West at 45-56 and the 37-year-old Bard seemed like a prime candidate to be moved before Tuesday’s trade deadline. He was a rental and is having a very good season, and given his age, it’s unlikely he’ll be the next Rockies contender. Rather than trade for prospects, the Rockies extended him.
Bard, the 2020 NL Comeback Player of the Year, has a 1.91 ERA with solid 27.6 percent strikeout and ground ball (53.8 percent of balls in play) rates this year. Its high-speed ground/strip combination is perfect for high-leverage jobs, and Bard would have been an upgrade to any competitor’s bullpen.
