Almost three months ago, Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers, because he was not happy with how the company often used him to return to the offense last season.
Samuel, who is entering the fourth and final year of his new contract, has previously struggled to make progress in negotiations over a contract extension. However, the 2021 first-team All-Pro may be on his way to getting the contract he wants.
Samuel’s coach tweeted a video saying his client is about to be paid on Tuesday. Although nothing has been finalized or released from his coach’s statement, the news is a step in the right direction for Samuel.
In June, 49ers general manager John Lynch reiterated that San Francisco has no plans to trade Samuel before the 2022 season and that ownership is committed to him staying in San Francisco.
“I wouldn’t trade him, and I would be a fool to trade him, so yes, Deebo will be a part of the 49ers this season,” Lynch said, according to Adam Schefter.
The 26-year-old became eligible for a contract extension after the 2021 season in which he caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and ran for 365 yards on 59 carries. He also recorded 14 total touchdowns in the ’21 season.
