Hempstead, NY – Hofstra seniors Tim Hegarty (men’s lacrosse) and Lucy Porter (women’s soccer) have been named winners of the Colonial Athletic Association’s prestigious Sports Leadership and Excellence Award for their respective sports, in a conference office announcement Tuesday morning.

The award mimics the Chuck Boone Leadership Award in football and the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award in men’s and women’s basketball. A student-athlete, representing the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship in their academic and sporting achievements was selected in each of the other 19 sports sponsored by the conference. The winners were voted on by CAA Faculty sports representatives.

Achieving his second CAA award for leadership and athletic excellence, Porter graduated in December with a final GPA of 3.87 as a specialty in community health with minors in neuroscience and psychology. He repeated how Dra. Sylvia J. Giallombardo Award for Best Female Scholar-Athlete at HOFSPYS 2022, was nominated for the second CoSIDA Academic All-America® team and was named the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Porter made an outstanding performance on the field of the women’s soccer team, as she was named to the third team of United Soccer Coaches All-America and was named CAA Midfielder of the Year for the third year in a row. after producing 25 points in seven goals. and 11 assists. Porter’s game helped Pride claim his seventh CAA title and fifth in six seasons as he advanced to the second round of the 202 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. Porter ended his career at Hofstra as to all-time leader in the program in points with 123, and is tied for second place in career goals (48) and assists (27).

With a cumulative GPA of 3.76, Hegarty graduated last May with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Six-time CAA Commissioner of Academic Honorary Award, Hegarty was also named to the Colston Health Marks Fellowship at the School of Health Professions and Health Services. In addition, he was one of four Hofstra student-athletes who was named All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Hegarty also contributed to community service efforts with the HEADstrong Foundation and Tunnel to Towers.

One of five Pride captains in 2022, Hegarty started in all 15 games on close defense and recorded 11 ground balls and nine caused balance losses while committing only one penalty all season. In his four years wearing the Hofstra uniform, Hegarty made 44 appearances with 17 starters for the Pride, and counted 17 ground balls and 13 caused loss of possession.
