Can New York City FC become the first MLS club in a decade to repeat itself as a league champion? Given the last nine pigeon games, it’s hard to bet against them.
NYCFC, as the hottest team in the league, enters Sunday’s match against Philadelphia Union (18:00 ET, FS1 / FOX Deportes / FOX Sports application). The Sky Blues haven’t lost since April 2, and have since released a record of 7W-0L-2T. But their real test awaits.
Last week, MLS Cup coach Ronny Deila left for Belgian Standard Liège. He was temporarily taken over by longtime assistant Nick Cushing.
The club earned a point against the Colorado Rapids on their Cushing debut on June 19, but it remains to be seen whether a mid-season coach change will derail NYCFC’s hopes of becoming the first team to win MLS titles for the first time since winning. The LA Galaxy did this in 2011-12.
“There’s a huge amount of respect for him,” NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson said of Cushing in an interview with FOX Sports on Friday. “I think it’s up to us, the players, to draw from past experiences and what the change means for the group. It can be an interesting period, but it’s how quickly you can adjust.”
Johnson and fellow veterinarians such as Alexander Callens and Maxime Chanot have already experienced a change of coach with the NYCFC by mid-year. Four summers ago, Patrick Vieira went to coach Nice in his native France. (Viera is now the head of English Premier League club Crystal Palace.) This history should help.
“The players have a responsibility to do that, as they make sure this job is flawless for Nick,” Johnson said. “We’re excited to step on the field and do our best for him.”
It won’t be easy in Philadelphia. The Union are also in the middle of a long unbeaten run and although they have won only once in the last seven – more than half of their 15 games so far in 2022 have ended in a stalemate – they beat the Pigeons 2-0 in the Bronx in March.
“The draws are disturbing because we had the advantage in most of these matches,” Union midfielder Dániel Gazdag, who scored in the Hungarian UEFA League of Nations last week, upset England 4-0, told FOX Sports. “It’s something we talked about, but I believe we have a good team. I think we can beat any team in this league, so we’re confident for Sunday.”

The unilateral victory was Hungary’s second victory over England in 10 days; they were also defeated on June 4 in Budapest in the inaugural part of the League of Nations 2022-23. How do Gazdag like the USMNT opportunities when the U.S. men’s national team is drawn into the same group as Harry Kane and Co. at the World Cup in Qatar later this year?
“I absolutely think the U.S. has a good chance against them and against everyone,” he said. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve watched a few American games. They have some really good players playing everywhere.”
2. “This offer was the best for me”
The 26-year-old Gazdag was already playing at a higher international level when he joined the Union early last season from Hungarian club Honvéd. In the not-so-distant past, established international players from Europe were generally considered too expensive for MLS. Instead, the league focused on recruiting younger foreigners; Dániel Sallói of Sporting Kansas City, Gazdag ‘s international teammate and close friend, signed a contract with SKC at 19.
These days, however, MLS has loosened its wallet enough that teams have a chance to outperform suitors in the lower European leagues in Austria, Belgium and even the Netherlands.
“I had a few opportunities in Europe, but it was the best offer that was the best for me,” Gazdag said. “MLS is developing very fast, from here they sell a lot of players to Europe every year. So from this league there is a way back to Europe if I’m good enough.”
With five defeats in the first eight games of the season, it was easy to write off the New England Revolution early on.
But the Bruce Arena team – which, remember, created the best regular season in MLS history last season – quietly turned things around. On Sunday night’s appearance in Vancouver, the Reds are unbeaten in eight and are just four points behind the leading NYCFC in the Eastern Conference.
Even with the departure of Matt Turner to Arsenal, this is a tried and tested, battle-tested list. If they qualify for the playoffs, they should be much tougher than last year, when they lost the introduction to the post-season penalty shootout against potential champions.
4. Consolation prize for the capital of the country…
Washington will not host matches at the 2026 World Cup – FIFA skipped the city’s hastily agreed joint offer with Baltimore last week – but will host an MLS all-star match in 2023, Audi has been confirmed by Commissioner Don Garber and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. Terrain on Thursday.

This weekend the “California Clasico” between the original MLS San Jose and LA Galaxy clubs will have to wait. As is the tradition, the match on Saturday at Stanford Stadium with 50,000 seats is expected to be hosted by earthquakes. But due to a power outage at the school, the venue is not available this weekend.
Instead of moving the race to a much smaller PayPal Park, Quakes has moved the race to September 24th.
One of the best stories of the 2022 season was the emergence of 16-year-old midfielder Obed Vargas as a key starter for the Sounders. Last month, Vargas helped Seattle become the first MLS club in more than two decades to win the CONCACAF title. He is now out indefinitely with a stressful back fracture.
“It’s uncomfortable for the baby because he was looking pretty good,” Brian Schmetzer said earlier this week. “But he will endure it. He will have a long career.”
Vargas ’injury is also a blow to the U.S. U20 national team, which is currently competing in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Honduras. Vargas was so crucial to Mikey Varas ’coaching plans that the team had an open spot on the roster for him for the knockout stage. Vezist D.C. United Jackson Hopkins officially replaced Vargas in the U.S. national team on Friday.
Meanwhile, Seattle (3-1-1 in their last five games) host Kansas City on Saturday. The Wizards are coming into town after earning just their fourth win of the year last weekend in Nashville, where the 25-game unbeaten home run finally ended. It was the fourth longest such series in MLS’s 27-year history.
