CANANDAIGUA – The George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum has announced the Speaker Series for 2022-2023, the Forum’s 11th season.
Held at the Fort Hill Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, four forum events will explore the political landscape and polarized electorate, provide insight into how to prepare for disasters in an unpredictable world, delve into income tax reform and discuss the dynamics that led to China’s rise to global prominence.
“We are excited to present a strong program this season and look forward to engaging and informative conversations with our experts and facilitators,” said Meg Reed, Chair of the Ewing Forum Board of Directors. “The Forum is a community-sponsored organization, and our gratitude and sincere thanks go out again to our donors who continue to support our mission to bring leading figures and emerging voices to Canandaigua to spark important conversation.”

Donkey and elephant go to the polls: Promoting politics where we respect each other: A visit from the prestigious Dornsife Center for the Future of Politics (CPF) at the University of Southern California, national policy strategists Mike Murphy, CFP Co-Director and Bob Shrum, CPF Founder and Director and President Carmen H .and Louis Warschaw for practical politics, will discuss the country’s polarized electorate and how to achieve the consensus needed to solve the problems facing the country.

How to Live in a World of Disasters: A Guide to Disaster Management: Juliette Kayyem is the national leader of America’s homeland security efforts and is the Robert and Renee Belfer Senior Lecturer and director of the Homeland Security and Safety and Global Health Projects at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She will share her experiences from government, academia, journalism and the private sector to illuminate the path through the country’s shared and unstable future. Her latest book is “The Devil Never Sleeps: Learning to Live in an Age of Disaster.”

The Prosperity Tax: An Idea for the 21st Century: Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, best-selling author and tax expert David Cay Johnston returns to the forum stage to talk about today’s tax system and how it should be reformed. Johnston is known for his ability to discuss the US tax system while ensuring that it is as comprehensible to a novice delving into a deeper understanding of financial literacy as it is to a CFO. He will explain his new “welfare tax” as an innovative alternative to our current system.

China on the Rise: The New Multipolar World Order: Michael O’Hanlon is a senior fellow and director of foreign policy research at the Brookings Institution, specializing in US defense strategy, the use of military force, and US national security policy. In 1972, President Richard Nixon’s visit to Beijing marked the end of China’s global isolation and its return to the world stage. Fifty-one years later, China has grown from economic insignificance to a world superpower. O’Hanlon will speak today and tomorrow about the national security implications of China’s rise to global prominence.
