Last week, the New York Times and Siena College published their first round of midterms voting. It covers a wide range of questions, from opinions on President Biden and former President Donald Trump to the state of the economy and our democracy. The poll showed widespread pessimism about the country and the people leading both parties. Beyond the pessimism, the data also highlights how Americans want things to be different, with clues to future elections and how coalitions between the two parties could continue to evolve.
In this episode of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast, Nate Cohn, the New York Times ’chief political analyst, joins the team to discuss the results of the poll. They also consider whether a Morning Consult / Political poll asking Americans if they think the United States is currently in recession is a “good or bad use of the vote.”
