The big story: Across Florida, campaigns for school board seats have increasingly become political affairs, even though the seats are nonpartisan by law. In parts of South Florida, for example, some conservative candidates are seeking support at gun shows, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

Hillsborough County, the third largest county in the state, appears to be an exception.

Although many candidates have known views on many pressing issues, they have taken steps to avoid saying much that is controversial. One of the biggest differences between them is the county’s property tax referendum to support employee wages. Read more here.

School districts across Florida continue to face teacher shortages. Between them, Lee County schools have nearly 300 teacher vacancies to fill with four weeks left until classes resume, WFTX reports. • The Broward County School District is looking to hire about 500 teachers, down from a year ago, WFOR reports. • Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz Jr. said his department is working on initiatives to get more teachers into classrooms, The Capitolist reported. • Bay County School District officials said a lack of affordable housing is their biggest obstacle, WMBB reported.
