LAST IN LINE’s collaboration with earMUSIC was announced five months ago by Appice during their performance on “Waste Some Time With Jason Green”. Vinny also revealed that LAST IN LINE had completed recording another six new songs in late January at Danny “Count” Koker’s Desert Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Formed in 2012 by Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell – co-conspirators and co-authors of Ronnie James Dio on the albums “Holy Diver”, “Last In Line” and “Sacred Heart”. Celebrate Ronnie James Dio’s early work by bringing together members from DIO’s original lineup. After playing live shows featuring only material from DIO’s first three albums, the band decided to move forward and create new music in a similar vein.
LAST IN LINE’s debut album, “Heavy Crown”, was released in February 2016 by Frontiers Music Srl, landing at # 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The release was initially preceded by a tragedy when Bain unexpectedly died at the age of 68 on January 23, 2016. LAST ON A COURSE, honoring what they knew it would be Bain’s desire to keep the band moving, he brought in Soussan and committed to touring constantly in order to support for the album before work on the next release, “II” from 2019, which was also made available via Frontiers Music Srl.
In June 2021, Soussan spoke to Metal-Net.com about writing and recording progress for the third LAST IN LINE album. “I was very motivating in the team,” said Phil. “I’m trying to keep everything going. We wanted to work on a few different aspects [during the pandemic]. We also had to get a new record deal – we changed labels – so that’s what we’re in the making process and we’re pretty close. But part of it was writing the third album. So we worked hard trying to write the third album and even record the third album when we were in different locations around the world. And of course this band acts as a unit in every sense of the word, so it’s a real obstacle, not being in the same room as everyone else and trying to make that happen.
In February 2021, Appice told Metal From The Inside that former DOKKEN and current FOREIGNER bassist Jeff Pilson, who produced both “II” and “Heavy Crown”, is not involved in the upcoming LAST IN LINE album. “We’ve made a change,” he said. “Actually, the guy who mixed the last album, Chris Collier, is great; works with KORN – he made this record. In a way, we produce it ourselves, among all of us.
“Jeff is great – Jeff is a great producer and [has] great ideas and stuff, but we just felt like we could probably do what we want to do now that we are in a band, we were on tour and we know what we want to hear,” he explained. . “But it works great. It sounds fantastic.
“And yes, I’ve been through a lot with Jeff Pilson. I’ve known him for years. He’s a great guy. He’s like my brother.
Also in February 2021, Soussan told the podcast “Pat’s Soundbytes Unplugged” about the musical direction of the new LAST IN LINE material: “The songs are another advance from the last album – the difference between” Heavy Crown “and” II “and now” II “and whatever will be called this next album; by the way, we don’t know yet. But it definitely evolved even more; went into an even greater evolution, but we always try to keep the characteristics of the LAST ON THE LINE there. I mean, you can’t shake these things – you can’t shake Vinny’s drumming, you can’t shake Vivian’s play. And I would like to say the same about myself, and of course, [singer] Andrew [Freeman].
Some of the early recording sessions for LAST IN LINE’s third album took place in January 2020 at the Steakhouse studio in North Hollywood, California.
