ANDERSON, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Blues legend Dr. Mac Arnold celebrated his 80th birthday in a big way at the Anderson Civic Center. Wednesday evening was filled with laughter, music, soul food and dancing.

Before the Arnold took the stage, many bands played different songs. Many of these musicians have shared the stage with him at one point.

“I never thought I could get so much love from musicians I’ve played with over the past 70 years,” said Arnold, who had a big smile on his face.

Arnold started playing the guitar when he was about ten years old. And it wasn’t an ordinary guitar back then. He and his brother made one using a gas can.

“You have someone who is a legend, like Mac, who takes younger boys under his wing and helps them so much,” said musician Eric Weiler. “Mac Arnold, he just influenced so many people, musicians, all across the backcountry.”

FOX Carolina asked the innovative legend about his favorite song he has written. He says

“Give them some kind of inspiration to not just sit around, not just throw your life away, not just ignore what you should be doing to create a better world. So I came up with the lyrics to ‘I Ain’t Sugar Coatin’,” Arnold explained.
