ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) -While cases of sick monkeys are increasing in the state of Georgia, the local health department is making sure vulnerable people can get the vaccine.
“The number of cases is growing exponentially, as all infections occur during an illness,” said David Holland, chief medical officer at the Fulton County Board of Health.
The Georgia Department of Health reports about 30 cases of monkeys in the state. That’s why they requested vaccines and distributed them to men in gay communities, a group they consider vulnerable.
“I think I’m more at risk than most people and I think I want to be involved,” said Scott Sohn, who received the vaccine.
“Most of the cases are in a restricted section of the population, so it’s not necessary to expand the conditions,” Holland said.
