The Current Global Health Care System Is Broken

More than 6.2 million people have died from COVID-19-related deaths on June 13, 2022. This is despite spending $ 8. See the article : This mysterious new Netflix crime show is so captivating and tense.9 trillion or 9.8% of world GDP on health care on 2019 worldwide.

More generally, half of the world does not have access to essential health services. In addition, the current health system leaves out the most vulnerable groups of people, causing disparities and inequalities in health.

Health is a fundamental human right. It should be like this for everyone.

Today, health care is provided in two ways:

– Insurance-based health systems: Generally, economically strong countries have health systems based on insurance that may or may not offer universal coverage. In addition, disparities and inequalities in health are widespread, even among the best-covered groups of people. As an example, in the United States racial and ethnic minorities, the economically weaker sections of the population, and people living anywhere other than in large marginal metropolitan counties continue to experience poorer health care.

– Pocket health systems: Economically weaker countries tend to have pocket health systems. It is important to note that even in economies that have insurance-based health systems, the most vulnerable group of people still have to consume health care out of their own pocket. In most of the world where pocket payment systems are common, corruption, favoritism and irresponsibility are deeply rooted.

Both systems have one thing in common: intermediaries who control patient access or create inefficiencies or both.

The current healthcare system increases the cost of mediation. Like banks, health insurance companies are financial institutions that suffer from the inherent weakness of the trust-based model. On the same subject : Researchers develop antimicrobial, plant-based food package designed to replace plastic: Starch-based fibers improve protection and reduce damage. More broadly, current systems have given rise to additional intermediaries that add more inefficiencies to the healthcare system. For example, it is estimated that of the $ 100 spent on prescription drugs purchased at a retail pharmacy with commercial insurance in the United States, more than $ 40 is captured by intermediaries.

This high cost of mediation limits the minimum practical sizes of transactions, which disproportionately adversely affects preventive care. In pocket health systems, the social cost of mediation in health care delivery networks is even higher, that is, without any insurance safety net, the most vulnerable groups are completely left out or they are not well cared for.

To quote Satoshi Nakamoto: “What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic evidence rather than trust, which allows two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party.”

The best way to fix the currently broken health care system is to build a new integrated healthcare system (IHS) between patients and providers that can provide equitable, high-quality health care as an easily accessible public good for all.

This new IHS peer-to-peer can work as follows:

This Bitcoin-Based IHS Can Bring Many Transformative Changes:

– Universal health care: “It is safe to assume that all people on this planet will eventually have some way to access the open Internet. We cannot make the same assumption about participation in the global financial system, ”said Jack Dorsey recently. See the article : House Passes Mental Health Package with Curtis Support | Congressman Curtis. The same can be said of the Internet and the healthcare system. In peer-to-peer IHS, every person who has access to the Internet can be part of the system only by providing their data on determinants of health.

– Equitable, evidence-based health care for all: Because all each member pays in “premiums” is their data and provider incentives are tied to patient outcomes, everyone will have access to equitable health care. and similar high quality.

– Accelerating the development of new healthcare technologies: Many of today’s medical technologies were accidentally discovered (e.g., penicillin, X-rays, and pacemakers). Similarly, trial and error is a common strategy in current R&D efforts. If a set of data is available that consists of all the determinants of a population’s health information, the development of innovative health technologies will be accelerated.

– Better health budget allocation: By 2030, the U.S. will spend $ 6.8 trillion a year on health care, according to the latest “official” estimates. Assuming that focusing on preventive care and practicing evidence-based medicine can lead to even a 5-10% reduction in health care spending, this will result in savings of $ 340 to $ 680 billion. . This is enough to cover the entire health care spending of the U.S. population. The available evidence points to how the proposed savings can be achieved, even just by implementing evidence-based care in the current system itself.

A Call To Action:

I think it takes a critical mass of three basic criteria for a new idea to start:

1. A well thought out concept that can bring about a transformative change.

2. Technical experience on how to run it well.

3. The resources needed to make this possible are available to use.

This article summarizes my thoughts on the first point. I choose to do this because my current experience is in healthcare. Through this article, I call on the Bitcoin community to explore ways in which we can achieve numbers two and three.
