The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is the government agency that coordinates medical care and social welfare in the Beaver State. During the pandemic, OHA was responsible for coordinating Oregon’s vaccination drive and disseminating information about COVID-19—both critical tasks.
The Office of the Agency for Equality and Inclusion, however, prefers not to rush government affairs. In fact, the office’s program manager postponed a meeting with partner organizations citing “urgency as a value of white supremacy.” …
“Thank you for your interest in attending a community conversation between Regional Health Equity Coalitions (RHEC) and Community Advisory Councils (CAC) to discuss Collaborative Community Investments (CIC),” wrote [Regional Health Equity Coalition Program Manager equality]. “We recognize that urgency is a value of white supremacy that can get in the way of more intentional and thoughtful work, and we want to commit to this dynamic. So we’ll reach out later to reschedule.”
Oddly enough, there are other people who have long believed that whites are more likely than non-whites to have certain character traits, such as (among other things) a willingness to go along with requests to get things done urgently. Indeed, I have heard jokes told by these people that reflect this very perception. I just don’t think highly of those people.
