STAUNTON, Virginia (WHSV) – Just last year, a Staunton woman opened a community garden and didn’t know how much it would grow.
“The idea behind Jones Garden is to provide affordable fresh food for the people in Staunton,” said Naomi Jones, creator of Jones Garden.
He also hoped to inspire healthier options for the community.
“To allow the people you know to be a little more self-reliant and have more experience in the agricultural process, from planting the seed to watching the plant grow, harvest and harvest the food, to cook it,” Jones said.
However, Jones realized that not everyone could access the gardens. He said that the customers would come to the gardens but they would not be able to collect their products and that he would put them in their cars for them.
This gave Jones an idea: to bring his products to people who can’t get them on their own.
“Health and well-being are a big problem for older populations,” Jones said.
Then, she created a food delivery service where she and volunteers bring fresh produce to the people in the community.
Jones said it only started with the seniors community closest to the gardens, but has since grown more than he thought.
Deliveries take place every Saturday afternoon. Volunteers leave the fresh produce at home.
“All our food delivery attendees get a compost bucket and when they compost with us or when someone composes with us, you get free products. You can come to the garden and exchange it for free products, “Jones said.
Jones said participants in the food delivery service provided positive feedback on the program.
“I have had people who said that mobility problems were a reason to join the program. Some people said they just wanted to eat more vegetables, which was nice, ”Jones said.
However, he said many are grateful that the gardens help them financially.
“The fact that we give them fresh produce every single week is especially helpful as food prices have risen so much lately since COVID. So this was a big plus for some of our attendees, ”Jones said.
Jones Garden is located on Montgomery Avenue in Staunton.
The garden has market days on Fridays from 3pm. at 18:00 and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00
