Julie Berninger has always had a side urge. Even as she worked her day job in tech, the now 33-year-old Massachusetts-based woman kept a blog, produced a podcast and started an Etsy shop selling printables like bachelorette parties.
“I was always doing a million different things, and even before the sidelines, I got my master’s degree online while I was working,” he says.
In 2019, Berninger co-founded Gold City Ventures, an online course company focused on side gigs, with his partner Cody Berman. Their most popular is a course on creating an Etsy shop for printables like the one she has. In 2021, Gold City Ventures brought in a million dollars in revenue. He left his job at Amazon in July 2021 to focus on the company full-time.
Berninger knows that part of his success came from landing jobs that paid well enough to invest time and resources into those projects. Still, after years of balancing multiple daily activities and now as a single mom with far less time, she’s picked up a few productivity tricks.
For anyone looking to dive into gigging outside of work, here are some tips from Berninger on how to do it.
Do the strategic thinking throughout your day
Since the birth of her daughter in 2019, Berninger has had much less time to focus solely on building her businesses. But he’s discovered that some of that work doesn’t have to be done in front of a computer. Instead, he can move his projects forward even while he is engaged in other activities.
“There was a lot of time where I was up [with my daughter] very late at night and even during the day when I couldn’t sit at the desktop computer,” she says. “People can set themselves a small bonus when they reach certain milestones,” he says. “I think it motivates” them.

Hire outside help to scale

When it comes to his blog, for example, “I’d let them do a rough draft of the articles and then I’d make it pretty and finish the articles,” he says. This could cost, say, $100 per 500-word article, and would cut some of the time he would have had to spend writing.
It has also hired people to do social media marketing, video editing and administrative work such as answering emails. He says that “if I can expand myself, I can do it all faster” and really grow his various businesses.
“Not everyone can do it,” he says, because not everyone has the discretionary money to spend on hiring help. But if you do, he suggests considering the investment.
