More than 400 business leaders from Brazil will visit Ohio University this summer to participate in a series of classes and seminars organized by the College of Business.

The program is led by the Latin American Institute of Business (LAIOB) which manages international educational opportunities with partners such as Ohio University.

LAIOB has taken business leaders to OHIO several times in previous years but has not visited since February 2020 due to a pandemic.

“We are excited to welcome friends and executive partners of the LAIOB program back to the Athens campus,” said College of Business Dean Jackie Rees Ulmer. “The LAIOB program provides Brazilian executives the opportunity to learn more about various areas of management from the top faculty on this historic and beautiful campus. We miss our friends from Brazil and are very excited to be back to Athens.

LAIOB business leaders will visit Ohio University in two groups.

The first group will have around 170 people and will be on the Athens campus July 10-21. Members of this group will focus on finance or marketing.

The second group will be on the Athens campus July 24 through August 4. These 250 members will focus on management and project management during their time in Ohio.

“These classes and seminars provide countless benefits for business leaders from Brazil and for our own faculty, who enjoy working with participants,” said President Hugh Sherman. “Ohio University is proud to host LAIOB participants once again this summer.”

More than 40 OHIO faculty members and several alumni speakers will be involved in the program and work with LAIOB participants.

“All professionals who come to Ohio are mid to senior level management,” explained Ashley Metcalf, executive education director and Robert H. Freeman Associate Professor at the College of Business. “They seek advanced educational opportunities, but don’t need a formal bachelor’s degree.”

Business leaders will live on campus and take classes at Nelson Commons, the Schoonover Center and the Baker University Center. They will also take part in special events such as the Southern Ohio Copperheads baseball game on July 13th.

“There is a special energy when Brazilian people are on campus for the LAIOB program,” Metcalf said.

During the first Friday session for each group, members will participate in an Industry Day that will focus on Athens ’efforts and the challenges they face. LAIOB participants will hear from executives in place at Ohio University, as well as from business leaders and local governments.

“Such a program is suitable for international executives,” Metcalf said. “They can come to a traditional college campus, but they also focus on applied learning.” Business leaders will be out of their comfort zone, acquiring new professional skills and developing professional networks while living in OHIO.

Ohio University faculty and staff, meanwhile, will benefit from accompanying international partners, learning about the businesses they lead, and learning from experiences in Brazil.

“The LAIOB program is very rewarding for our faculty members,” Metcalf said. “It’s a good international education opportunity for everyone involved.”
