Reading books is alive and well in Fairfield and our bookstore team couldn’t be happier. Remember, Kindles haven’t become outdated, but we’re realizing that more of our customers are looking for a real book they can hold in their hand. This is definitely a summer of reader demand.

As responsible for walking at least three times a week at the Fairfield University bookstore, I have a front-row seat to what our customers are specifically looking for. I usually have a stream of readers ordering various books at our computer consultation table and I am happy to refer them to the many sections with books of all kinds.

One of the important tables we created for this summer is a large summer fiction reading table of our most popular beach books and we are definitely finding that these books are selling even better than the same titles on the shelves. I can’t cover all titles, but I’ve selected a few to recognize.

For example, Colleen Hoover, who has easily written more than seven books that we always sell out, has my vote for leader of the author group. We literally can’t keep her books on the table or shelves. The most popular titles seem to be “All Your Perfects”, “It Ends With Us” and “Verity”.

“Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Jenkins Reid, “Malibu Rising” and “Daisy Jones & The Six” are in second place, along with Elin Hildebrand – she has a new New York Times bestseller, “Hotel Nantucket”.

Some other popular works on the table include “Summer Love” by Nancy Thayer, “That Summer” by Jennifer Weiner and “People We Meet on Vacation” and “Beach Read” by Emily Henry.

I am also regularly replacing copies of “One Italian Summer” by Rebecca Serle, “The Last Thing He Told me” by Laura Dave and “Where the Crawdads Sing”, now a big movie.

Mystery and suspense continue this summer with authors such as the prolific James Patterson – with or without co-authors – David Baldacci, Stephen King, Lucy Foley, Clive Cussler, Michael Connelly, Preston and Child and John Grisham. I always replenish these additional New York Times bestselling books with fresh copies.

The non-fiction and biography/memories side of the store is busier than ever and among the most popular authors I’ve seen this summer are Patrick Radden Keefe (true crimes and biography section); Katie Couric, Dave Grohl, Glennon Doyle and Viola Davis.

“Project 1619” by Nicole Hannah-Jones remained a popular history book this summer. And one of my favorites is “Talking to Strangers”, “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, and a number of other books. “Think Again” by Adam Grant, a business book that has been on and off the New York Times bestseller list, and “Sapiens” by Yuval Noah Harari are also on the list.

Children’s books and student summer reading books have remained as busy as our other trade books and our Where’s Waldo treasure hunt, which includes nearly 20 other stores in Fairfield, is receiving a lot of interest. Our Waldo party is coming up on July 30th.

While my snapshot of compelling summer readings doesn’t cover every author and title we have, my goal was to emphasize that reading is alive and well this summer and customers are coming in regularly. I really hope we get a huge amount of customers during the next sidewalk sale this weekend. We’re well-stocked and ready for even more summer readers.
