The 2022 Three-Book Program – a summer reading program for new undergraduates – includes two books and a documentary film that address unique approaches to biodiversity and its loss.

As Stanford’s incoming undergraduates come from all over the world, they can be part of a shared academic conversation about biodiversity even before they arrive on campus through the Three Book program.

“The theme of this year’s three books will connect you with a common thread that we need to persist, to thrive on this planet, and to manage our home for the future,” biology professor Elizabeth Hadly wrote in her letter introducing this year’s theme for Stanford. common signature reading program for first-year undergraduates and new transfer students.

Hadly is the Paul S. and Billie Achilles Professor of Environmental Biology in the School of Humanities and also faculty director at Jasper Ridge Biological Reserve. As Three Books faculty moderator, she carefully selected the overall theme and worked with a committee of faculty, staff and students over several months to select the books and media that new incoming students could read and talk to each other during the summer.

Works selected for this year’s Three Book Program:

The topic of biodiversity is not just about life on the planet, but also about the “myriad ways in which organisms interact, consume, and channel energy to live and reproduce,” Hadly wrote in her letter.

“Perhaps most importantly, biodiversity is not just about the present, it is the sum of all living matter that has created, and in turn, responded to and shaped our world over billions of years,” he said. she continued. “Past and present diversity is indeed a compendium of stories, of adaptations to changing conditions on the planet. Yet as humanity erodes biological diversity, we destroy those histories, limit our repertoire of choices, knowledge and resilience for the future, and in turn threaten our own survival.

The Three Book Program began in 2004 and has become one of the most popular new student experiences. The program concludes with discussions with authors and guests at new student orientation and the fall term – including an in-person author panel at Stanford in September.

All works are available online for students on a password protected website. Three Books is made possible by the Lamsam-Sagan Family Endowment Fund for Undergraduate Education.
