Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change

By Pema ChodronShambhala $ 16,9521 May, 2019 See the article : Prime Video: The 46 Best Movies to Watch.

From the publisher: Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron shares life-changing practices for living with wisdom, confidence, and integrity amid confusing situations and uncertain times. We live in difficult times. Life so often seems like a turbulent river that threatens to drown us and destroy our world. Why, then, should we not stick to the certainty of comfort – to our deep habits and familiar ways?

Because, Pema Chodron has learned, that kind of bonding based on fear keeps us from the infinitely stronger experience of being fully alive. The Buddhist teachings presented here — known as the “Three Commitments” —provide a treasure trove of wisdom to learn to enter the unknown, to fully and fearlessly embrace the absence of a human basis, for people of all faiths.

By Jeffery Payne, Book Department Coordinator: It’s a topsy turvy world. The ability to step back and reevaluate how we react to the things around us is a gift or a luxury that most of us do not have. We live lives based on the fear that challenges us, and we do little to move forward from the “comfortable with the discomfort” aspect that each one catches on to.

The timely book by Buddhist nun Pema Chodron presents us with three perspectives that help bring awareness and presence into our lives and emotions. Her writing style is incredibly accessible and heartfelt. She feels like she is lying around the table by you, drinking her tea and engaging in a serious conversation. A book for everyone, regardless of his journey of faith.

Under the Whispering Door

From the publisher: Welcome to Charon’s Crossing. The tea is hot, the scones are fresh, and the dead are still going on. When he picks up Wallace from his own funeral, Wallace begins to suspect that he may be dead. And when Hugo, the owner of a particular tea shop, promises to help share, Wallace decides he’s definitely dead. But even in death he is not ready to abandon the life he barely lived, so when Wallace is given a week to share, he begins to live his whole life in seven days. Fun, hilarious, and gentle, this book is a story that lifts him about a life he spent in the office and a death he spent building a house.

By Jeffery Payne, Coordinator of the Book Department: Quirky and absolutely delightful. The good contact of the author in the treatment of death, sorrow and living at the second chance makes this a gem of a book. It is a challenge that at first pleases the main character but as the story progresses there is a hint of hope and redemption. The spirit characters (pun intended) will make you smile and think about the choices we make in this surprisingly cheerful reading.

Dress Codes: How the Laws of Fashion Made History

From the publisher: In “Dress Codes,” law professor and cultural critic Richard Thompson Ford presents a “very informative and entertaining” story (The New York Times Book Review) of fashion laws from the Middle Ages to the today, a walk on the red carpet of history to uncover and examine the canons, customs, and habits of dress — rules we often take for granted. After reading the Dress Code, you’ll never think of fashion as superficial again – and wearing it will never be the same.

From Jeffery Payne, Book Department Coordinator:

Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, we all have a bias of clothes. The clothing was used to send subtle (and not so subtle) messages to those around us and to the large social masses. Think of the “power red tie” worn by politicians, papal regalia and insignia, iconic dungarees and a white James Dean t-shirt, and a flamboyant over-the-top drag queen outfit with a sequined and sizable one. Each of these represents a different attitude and presence that we all easily see and recognize.

Richard Thompson Ford’s excellent book on the lineage of fashion explores and sheds light on the fascinating world of style and the sheer number of clothing dictations. We learn how clothing communicates, indicates social strata and meaning to those around us. Explore the story of why we wear what we wear in this very demanding reading.
