What if I told you that anyone with an Amazon Prime Video subscription also has access to the other streaming service at no extra cost? Well, let me introduce you to Freevee (opens in a new tab).

Launched in January 2019 as IMDb Freedive, then renamed IMDb TV five months later, and then finally re-launched as Amazon Freevee in April 2022, the platform offers a wealth of movies and TV shows that can be watched watch for free. The only problem is that all of the content is ad-supported.

Most recently, Freevee rolled out across Germany in August, and it appears to be growing its collection of content — it first caught my attention this week when Amazon Prime Video’s interface was revamped. After seeing Thor: Love and Thunder in the theater, I was recommended Superbob with Brett Goldstein (best known as the villainous Roy Kent in Ted Las), a low-budget comedy that fell on my radar. The actor also does a wonderful podcast on Spotify, Films To Be Buried With, which I’ve been working my way through lately.

I checked all the usual places: Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple, HBO Max, and a billion other streamers… and nothing. So I gave up until I stumbled upon it thanks to Prime Video’s revamped homepage. Not being a fan of ads, I don’t mind watching a couple to get access to a movie I specifically wanted to see, so I see this as a fair trade-off.

Previously, Freevee was hidden under the “Free to Me” tab at the top of the page and could be found by scrolling down and eventually coming across a single row of movies and shows. It didn’t even have its own pullout under the categories tab, so it was never the easiest to discover. This only applies to those in the UK and Channel Islands, where Freevee is available elsewhere, such as in the US, as a separate but still free app.

In addition to Superbob, Freevee also has seven full seasons of Westwing, The Breakfast Club, Donnie Darko, Les Miserables, and even its own original shows like Alex Rider. Obviously not something worth paying for on its own, but a nice free addition that makes an Amazon Prime Video subscription a bit better – especially considering that the price is about to go up.

Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 / £8.99 / AU$6.99, or an annual membership can be purchased from September for $139 / £95 / AU$59. Something to consider when deciding whether or not to renew. One boost is that Amazon has Daniel Craig’s final performance as James Bond in No Time to Die and the must-see R-rated superhero show The Boys, so make sure you check them out first.
