A new Netflix documentary features antivirus founder-turned-fugitive John McAfee and his life on the run after being suspected of the 2012 murder of his neighbor in Belize (via Deadline). McAfee asked the film crew to document his experience of avoiding the authorities – and apparently the Mexican cartel.

The documentary, titled Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee, has video journalists thrown into the whirlwind of McAfee’s life. With weapons, drugs and alcohol, the group travels through Belize and Guatemala and somehow ends up on a boat going to the Bahamas.

To say that McAfee had an interesting story would be an understatement. After he made a name for himself as the creator of McAfee’s antivirus software – which Intel acquired in 2021 – things started to worsen as Belize police found him interested in the murder of his neighbor, Gregory Faull. Since then, McAfee’s actions have gotten even more bizarre: he fell into crypto; he tried to run for president; and even developed a “break-in-resistant” phone. In 2020, he was arrested in Spain for tax evasion and was later found dead in a prison cell prior to extradition to the US. His death was deemed suicide.

Running with the Devil is coming to Netflix on August 24. It is produced by British studio Curious Films, whose co-founder, Dov Freedman, told Deadline that the film was made “10 Years.” This is not the first time John McAfee has been the subject of a documentary; in 2016, Showtime produced Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee.
