FLINT, MI – The Art Institute of Flint named Tracee Glab as its new executive director this month.
According to an FIA press release, he will become the FIA’s fourteenth director. Glab is the third woman in a top-level executive role since Margaret Davis and Mary Brozik led the FIA in the early 1930s.
His expertise and knowledge of art history and visitor engagement is reflected in the many programs and publications he has led and developed at FIA.
He has supervised more than 100 exhibitions, curated over 40 exhibitions, collaborated extensively with contemporary artists both locally and internationally, and also supervised 15 publications.
Although Glab is taking on a new role, he is already a familiar member of the esteemed museum.
Glab previously served as the FIA’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions since 2009. His new role as executive director succeeds John B. Henry, who announced his retirement this year.
“My tenure as curator at FIA has been the most rewarding part of my museum career, and I look forward to leading the museum into its next chapter,” said Glab. “With its excellent art collection and acclaimed art school in the heart of the Flint Cultural Center, I am excited to build on FIA’s strong foundation and engage the public in the arts in new and innovative ways.”
He previously worked with Salvador Salort-Pons, now director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, who recommended him for the FIA curator position.
“I am very excited to name Tracee Glab as the next Executive Director of the Flint Institute for the Arts,” said Salort-Pons. “He is uniquely equipped to continue building on FIA’s successful history. He brings a fresh perspective to the job, helping the institution engage with the community in impactful ways to provide access to world-class education.”
“I know her impressive work ethic and dedication to the arts will serve her well, and the DIA looks forward to working with her as we bring the best art to our state.”
In addition to his time at FIA, Glab previously spent 10 years at the Detroit Institute of Arts in various departments, including curatorial, publications, and education.
He holds an MA in Art History from Wayne State University and a BA in Art History from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Glab was selected after the museum’s board of directors conducted a national search led by m/Oppenheim Executive Search, a search firm that specializes in finding candidates for nonprofit leadership roles.
“After meeting with several talented candidates, we believe that Tracee’s knowledge of the FIA and the community, as well as her role as a curator in expanding the museum and collection, made her an excellent fit for the role of Executive Director,” said Thomas Lillie. President of the FIA Board of Trustees. “The FIA is a valuable asset to the community, and we believe Tracee’s vision and leadership will help expand membership, attract new visitors, and continue to grow the number of items in the collection and the artists represented by their works.”
FIA has grown to become the second largest art museum in Michigan and one of the largest museum art schools in the country. Thousands of patrons, students of art schools and young people who participate in outreach activities interact with the museum every year. The museum will celebrate its centenary in six years.
“The FIA has become an internationally recognized and respected institution right in the heart of Flint,” said Glab. “As we approach our 100th anniversary, I’m excited to celebrate the institution’s amazing legacy, making art and arts education available to even more people in our community and beyond in the years to come.”
