The X-Files (1993-2018)

The X-Files is rooted in pop culture and included in countless prestigious lists that rank the best shows of all time – and for good reason. Although the monsters and fantasy elements are compelling, it is the dynamic between Mulder and Scully – the believer and the skeptic – that distinguishes this series. To make things even more complicated, she falls in love with Allison (Crystal Reed), whose family consists of a long line of wolf hunters. With the help of his best friend, Stiles (Dylan O’Brien), Scott learns to navigate his new life as he goes through all the classic drama that comes with being in high school. Librarians are centered around a group that travels on various adventures to save ancient – and often magical, artifacts. Merlin (2008-2012)

Based on the Arthurian legends and the close friendship between Merlin and King Arthur, Merlin acts as an origin story for many of the Arthurian legends we know. When the young sorcerer Merlin (Colin Morgan) is sent to the kingdom of Camelot by his mother because of his “special gift”, he somehow ends up saving the life of Prince Arthur (Bradley James), who wears it. to become Arthur’s servant. Merlin soon reveals that the reason for his gift is to protect Arthur. However, Merlin must hide his powers because magic has been banned in Camelot by Arthur’s father, King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head), and those captured to practice are executed. Taking some of the most iconic characters from the legend, Merlin runs free with ideas and acts as an origin story not only for Arthur and Merlin, but for Morgana, Gwen, Lancelot, and many others. One of the BBC’s most popular shows around the world, Merlin is an excellent series for fans of legends and novels who just want a good and fun fantasy show. – Arianne Binette
The Legend of Vox Machina (2022-present)

Critical Role is well known and praised for being one of the leading roleplay podcasts that launched Dungeons and Dragons back into the zeitgeist and led to a slew of board game podcasts. But the show took it a step further with the launch of The Legend of Vox Machina, an animated show based on its Critical Role campaign. While hundreds of episodes of a podcast can be difficult to digest for any casual audience member curious about what the excitement is. First funded via a Kickstarter campaign, if the big studios haven’t been able to see the merit of the Critical Role fandom, they’re definitely hooked now. Within an hour of launch, Kickstarter surpassed $ 1 million, and its release via Prime Video has earned critical and public acclaim for its mix of humor, fantasy and chaos. If you like fantasy and you like the grittiness of shows like The Boys and Invincible, this is the show for you. – Thérèse Lacson

The show draws a clear parallel with the struggles that immigrant populations feel when they arrive in a new country. While the story may be loaded with too many stories, the world of Carnival Row is intriguing. The murder-mystery look and neo-noir tone remain interesting, and for fans of the often overlooked urban fantasy subgenre, this is sure to scratch an itch. – Thérèse Lacson

Most often, book-inspired TV shows fail to capture the original author’s intentions when translating a story on the small screen. Thank God (and the Devil) Prime Video’s Good Omens was created for TV by Neil Gaiman, who wrote the original book of the same name with fantasy legend Terry Pratchett. Set amidst the Apocalypse, Good Omens follows the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) as they seek to prevent the end of the world. While the forces of Paradise and Hell are anxious to finally meet in battle in the war to end all wars, Aziraphale and Crowley do not want to end their mortal lives and do anything to prevent the rise of the Antichrist. . In addition to immersing yourself in Christian theology to create a fantastic universe, Good Omens also presents one of the best friendships on TV, as Aziraphale and Crowley learn that good and evil do not exist in extremes after spending millennia building a love affair. – Marco Vitu Oddo

Neil Gaiman’s American God is a novel that explores the limits of human faith, showing how we place our collective trust in entities that exist beyond the limits of religion. The American God’s Prime Video adaptation follows the same path, adhering to the same rhythms of the story, but leaving its wandering characters free to make their own choices. The story follows Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a convicted elder who is associated as a conductor by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). Shadow Moon’s job is to drive Lord Wednesday away and help him unite the Old Gods from ancient cultures, who will fight to not be destroyed by the New Gods at the center of humanity’s faith, such as Media , Globalization, and Technology. American Gods is a curious meditation on what we choose to believe, and how our collective trust in the larger entity makes them stronger to control our lives. As a fantasy series set in our time, American Gods also offers something unique compared to other productions of the genre. – Marco Vitu Oddo
The Wheel of Time (2021-present)

Based on Robert Jordan’s best-selling and beloved fantasy series, The Wheel of Time follows a group of children into a fantasy land. All from the same small village, they meet a mysterious man and woman who tell them that one of them is the fabulous Dragon Reborn. The adventure of high fantasy might seem a bit like The Lord of the Rings at first, but then it takes a sharp turn. Rosamund Pike plays Moiraine Sedai, the mysterious woman who is a member of a female group of magical users called Aes Sedai. While the first season does a lot to establish the future story, it also plays like its own line of mini quests. At the end of the season, the biggest secrets and destinies are revealed. If you’re a fan of high fantasy, but maybe you didn’t like the grimdark aspect of Game of Thrones, check out this series. – Thérèse Lacson
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

All of Joss Whedon’s work is worth considering in a new context given the substantial allegations of abuse and misconduct against him, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s legacy does not belong to Whedon. It belongs to Sarah Michelle Gellar for the creation of a feminist icon, the incredible writers who have pushed the boundaries of online television, and the dedicated fan base that has evolved with the legacy of the show. At its best, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a creative mix of teenage anguish and monster mythology, and the musical episode “Once More, With Feeling” is a masterpiece in its own right. – Liam Gaughan
Grimm (2011-2017)

The Grimm fantasy series begins with Portland detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) who discovers that fairy tale creatures are real and hidden in sight – some kind and helpful, others bloodthirsty and vengeful. Only hunters from him are descendants, Grimm, and other creatures can see his true form. Not only will he have to find a way to protect the city from the threats only he and a few others can see, but he will also have to uncover his family history and legacy as Grimms. The series balances a “crime-of-the-week” procedural drama format with an exceptional world construction that makes Portland feel like another world. Grimm isn’t afraid to explain the darker origins of classic tales, and even among the plethora of fairy tale adaptations on the screen available, the series is truly something special. – Brynna Arens
