What Is Forever Summer: Hamptons About?

Territorial locals and resident city invaders from the Hamptons collide in this docu-soap about a group of 20-somethings hashing out their quasi-romances and post-high school friendships in one of America’s wealthiest vacation spots.

Why (and to whom) do we recommend it?

There is a school of thought that says there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure; that any TV show, movie, or song that brings joy should be savored and celebrated without shame. This writer largely subscribes to that idea, but then comes Forever Summer: Hamptons. Watching it creates real guilt. Guilt for being so caught up in the bland lives and petty dramas of these conventionally pretty, media-grooming college kids. They should be repulsively basic, but it’s that basicness that makes them strangely interchangeable, even if they all live in the Hamptons.

Part of its hellish appeal is that Forever Summer: Hamptons fills the void left when Laguna Beach gave way to The Hills, a more popular zeitgeist show, which nevertheless lost some of the magic of that liminal time between adolescence and adulthood. . Forever Summer is clearly going for the same vibe, because of the hazy voiceover, the problematic lovers, and the mysterious drama that ensues when your friend looks like she’s being poached by other brats.

Forever Summer’s 20-somethings aren’t as compelling as Laguna Beach’s Lauren Conrads and Kristin Cavillaris, though honestly, a good 60% of what made LC and Kristin’s drama so addictive was what we all invested in of our own views and experiences. Those rich traitors from Orange County with their beach parties and mansions were somehow known because on some level minor drama translates across borders. The same can be said of these young people.
