Summer is in full swing, which means there’s a new crop of blockbusters to catch in theaters. But if you’d rather stay home to avoid the heat (and crowds), it’s never a bad idea to switch to Netflix and catch up on some of the old movies you may have missed. After all, there are plenty of them that are about to leave the streaming service. From an incredibly underrated horror sequel, to a couple of Tom Hanks classics, to one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time, here are seven major movies to watch before they leave Netflix this month.

Writer: Aaron Sorkin (based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich)

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Brenda Song

Who would have thought a Facebook movie could work so well, let alone work? The Social Network follows Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), the circumstances that led to his creation of Facebook, and the lawsuits that soon followed. The performances here are all spot on, and the film benefits greatly from Aaron Sorkin’s bubbly script, David Fincher’s confident directing, and a haunting score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. In terms of drama biopic, The Social Network is one of the best at turning what could easily have been an uninspired cash grab into a captivating cinema.

The Strangers: Prey at Night

Writers: Bryan Bertino and Ben Ketai See the article : Netflix’s Top Movies and Shows: What’s Trending June 27, 2022.

Cast: Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Damian Maffei

The Strangers was a firm favorite with audiences and critics alike when it was released in 2008. A sequel had been in development for years before Prey at Night was finally released in 2018. And not only is it as good as the original, it’s even better. The masked killers of the original are back, though now they’re terrorizing the unwitting occupants of a secluded trailer park. The film is beautifully directed by Johannes Roberts and features relentless action that is paced to perfection. While the first film was more firmly rooted in psychological horror, Prey at Night is a tribute to slasher films, particularly those of the 1980s. In fact, the ’80s vibe is part of what gives the film its unique flavor. It features a spooky atmosphere, abundant neon lighting, and a fantastic John Carpenter-style soundtrack (a sequence that takes place in a swimming pool is particularly memorable). It’s best to go blind here, then refrain from reading reviews or spoilers. Oh, and make sure you lock the front door.

Annabelle: Creation

Cast: Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto

If you’ve seen the first Annabelle and would have liked to know the origin story of the spooky doll, chances are you’ll be more than satisfied with the second installment of the franchise. While the first film was a prequel to The Conjuring, Annabelle: Creation goes back even further to literally explore Annabelle’s creation of dollmaker Samuel (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife Esther (Miranda Otto), who are plagued with horrors in their remote farm after the death of their young daughter, Annabelle. The film’s fears are very successful as the characters in danger this time around are mostly children, and Talitha Bateman and Lulu Wilson are more than busy carrying the bulk of the film. It’s not the scariest rumor in the franchise, but another trip to The Conjuring universe is never a bad thing.

Django Unchained

Director Quentin Tarantino writes a love letter to Spaghetti Western in Django Unchained, the story of Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, who teams up with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to track down Django’s wife and a group of outlaws. In true Tarantino style, Django Unchained features crackling dialogue and heavily stylized action sequences in a similar vein to Inglourious Basterds. The performances are solid, most notably Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his finest roles as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie. This isn’t a historically accurate film, but the killer script, interpretations, and over-the-top action make it a lot of fun.

Forrest Gump

Writer: Eric Roth (based on Winston Groom’s book of the same name)

Cast: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Sally Field, Michael Conner Humphreys, Hanna R. Hall

It would be hard to find a more lovable character than Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks plays the lead role, a kind and kindhearted man from Alabama who does not allow his intellectual disability to affect the fullness of his life. Forrest Gump is unique in that it is a fusion of genres: comedy, romantic comedy, war story and more. It is this blend of genres that gives the film its unique flavor and also allows Forrest to grow into an incredibly three-dimensional character. While the humor, fun and laughs come from Forrest’s travels and experiences that unknowingly influenced several key moments in U.S. history, the beating heart of the film is his relationship with childhood friend Jenny (Robin Wright). Their connection ranges from innocent and sweet to complicated and sad as Forrest and Jenny continue to cross paths over the course of their very different lives. If you’re looking for a film that is equally comical, uplifting and heartwarming, you may not find one better than Forrest Gump.

You’ve Got Mail

Authors: Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron (based on the play Parfumerie by Miklós László)

Cast: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey, Jean Stapleton, Dave Chappelle

If you’re looking for more Tom Hanks after Forrest Gump, You’ve Got Mail might be the perfect double function. The film features rival bookstore owners Joe (Hanks) and Kathleen (Meg Ryan) starting an online romance, completely oblivious to their competing commercial endeavors. The film was praised for its romantic comedy elements and strong chemistry between the protagonists Hanks and Ryan. While the concept of dial-up and chat rooms may be a bit old-fashioned, the film’s themes of the joys (and dangers) of human connection remain current.

Love, Actually

Cast: Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth

It’s safe to say that Love, Actually is one of the most loved and enjoyable vacation movies of all time. The British romantic comedy features a series of intersecting stories of love and loss (and lots of Bill Nighy singing), all set during the holiday season. Most of the film’s appeal comes from the cast of the cast, and it’s especially fun to see so many prominent actors sharing the screen. Whether it’s the ridiculous antics of Nighy as rock and roll star Billy Mack, or the more heartwarming story of Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Mark (Andrew Lincoln), Love Actually has something for everyone. And if you’re one of its many die-hard fans, you won’t have a problem watching it in mid-July.

Now you can watch everything on Netflix no matter where you live. In addition to introducing a new menu loaded with fresh and surprising content; recently, the famous TV, video and movie streaming hulk extended its reach and coverage to over 130 new countries that previously couldn’t access it.
