E-commerce titan Amazon.com Inc. AMZN launched its first original series in 2013 as it worked to grow its Amazon Prime Video streaming platform. The video streaming platform can be traced back to 2006 and is a member benefit for those who pay for Amazon Prime.
Latest data from The Hollywood Reporter reveals what the most viewed series have been on Amazon Prime Video over the last two years.
What happened: According to The Hollywood Reporter, for the past two years Amazon has had a focus on adapting best-selling novels into series for its Prime Video platform.
The company’s three biggest hits by viewership, “Reacher,” “The Wheel of Time,” and “The Boys,” are based on books. Other hit shows for Prime Video, including Bosch and Jack Ryan, are also based on stories from bestselling books.

Netflix’s stats don’t include the recently released Stranger Things season 4, which made a huge debut on the streaming platform, or Bridgerton season 2.
Netflix’s numbers are based on the company reporting its numbers in millions of hours watched.
Amazon Prime still lags far behind Netflix’s hit shows, with many of the hit originals on Netflix releasing in their premiere week, which can put a top Amazon Prime Video show on its feet in a month or more.

Why It Matters: Amazon has made a big bet on another best-selling novel, with the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings being adapted into a TV series. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is scheduled to premiere on September 2, 2022.
