Netflix’s new design series “How to Build a Sex Room” (now streaming) enlists the help of interior designer Melanie Rose, who says she has been creating sensual spaces for about a decade. In the eight-episode season, filmed last summer, it transforms 12 spaces for Denver residents who are positive for sex and adventurous.
“The first thing that came to mind was, ‘Oh my gosh, my parents are going to see this show!'” Says Taylor Stonack, who appears with her boyfriend, AyJay Lasater, at the premiere. But “the way we look at sex, and the people around us, is a very positive thing, so the hesitation was overcome by all the positive things that we think the show is going to bring to the world.”
Rose hopes the series proves that such spaces don’t have to be “dirty and disgusting.” She wants viewers to “see that they can actually be quite beautiful and luxurious, and really encourage people to talk about sex.”

There’s no doubt that “Sex Room” is looking to put the “Big O” in a renovation. It comes in sex toys, suspension and cage games. Rose meets the participants, learns their tastes and encourages them to push their limits. “I opened up the communication between us, asking for what we want a lot more and making sex a lot more intentional about how we explore things together and have a dialogue, honestly,” Lasater says. “I don’t know if we had the same level of intimacy and openness if we didn’t go through this experience.”

Those interested in creating their own sexy space should start with a conversation, says Rose.
“If you want to warm up a little more in the bedroom, explore the idea of bringing some toys for adults. If you want to go one step further (with) remodels, and you don’t have space, then why not reinvent the bedroom? Bring some luxurious linen and candles. If you want a little more spark, put some restraints under the mattress. ”
But “don’t try (to) put a sexual swing on the roof without putting it in beams,” says Rose. “If you put a sexual swing in a drywall alone, it’s a disastrous result.”
