The year ago, you may have heard, has not been good for Netflix: declining subscribers, simultaneous stock declines, layoffs, a disappointing Oscars after a huge campaign (and lots of nominations). And although a strong Emmy nomination day is expected next Tuesday, it is unlikely that the platform will take back the lead from HBO / HBO Max – and more embarrassingly, it is largely dependent on flagship hits to complete it.
Netflix’s strongest feature when it comes to Television Academy is reach: their shows are simply more watched than those from other streamers and networks, giving Netflix more leeway when it comes to an increasingly populist voice. That’s how Emily in Paris found a surprising slot machine for best comedy series last year over relatively acclaimed – and underserved – fellow students Girls5Eva, among others. And this year, that’s why you can safely bet on three of its big hits that crash the drama series field.
Two of them – the closing Ozark and the closing Stranger Things – represent Netflix’s era in fading: the vast juggernauts that helped introduce the studio as a major Hollywood player. The final seasons of both series landed with a bang, and Netflix has put their efforts behind them to ensure that they return to the top category and make some noise beyond – let Laura Linney finally win best actress, or the Duffer brothers who go all the way. way of directing.
But these prospects are less likely to come to the fore than Squid Game, Netflix’s brightest new hope and the herald of its burgeoning global strategy. Cobra Kai and Emily in Paris, both nominated for best comedy in 2021, did not lose steam among viewers either. And yet, all are long shots to return to the top categories, and leave the prestigious commercial Friend chart as they drift more towards the latter sphere – a fate that befalls an increasing part of the streamer’s production.
Netflix claimed three of 2021’s eight slot machines in the best comedy series, but this year seems to miss the category altogether. The best chance to make it is Russian Doll, another relic from an earlier Netflix era (just unlike Ozark or Stranger Things, the show’s delayed return did not exactly catch fire). There’s a warning sign there: The Streamer has had at least one – and usually two – series nominated for best comedy every year since 2014, from Orange Is the New Black to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to The Kominsky Method. In other words, it is likely to break an eight-year series.
The four-year series of challengers in the best limited series should at least continue. While there is no giant size the size of Queen’s Gambit in Netflix’s current stables, Maid emerged as a significant hit with critics and viewers this fall; after a strong run with industry associations during the winter, it has proven its endurance and should deliver a healthy performance on Tuesday. More of a question mark is Inventing Anna, an even bigger commercial hit, but one that the critics did not particularly go for. The presence of the recent Emmy girlfriend Julia Garner in the polarizing lead role increases the chances considerably: She is a factor in the slide for best actress, and depending on how much the voters liked her work here, a few noms may surround her. The limited series field is very competitive, but it never hurts to be the popular boy.
Overall, the true Netflix story coming out Tuesday could be the tough road to Emmy nominations, into 2023 and beyond. Last year, the studio simply dominated, with The Crowns sweep and The Queen’s Gambits strength in advance, winning as Ewan McGregor’s best actor upset for Halston, the cherry on top. This year, while Apple TV + defends the comedy title and HBO Max seems to eat up the rest, Netflix is back in a fighting position, and is largely dependent on the most famous (and oldest) hits in the catalog – plus the symbol of the future, in Squid Game. It is a kind of parallel where with the situation the streamer is in by the way. Big things can come out of that flick, to be sure – but so can some hard reality checks.
