There are a million ways to tell even very old stories. Beauty, directed by Andrew Dosunmu and written by Lena Waithe, riffs on a classic theme, the idea of a talented artist who is torn between her career and her family, trying to find a balance between her own ambition and demands of the people closest to you. An intriguing parent who sees his offspring as a great dollar sign, a cunning manager who tries to force a growing talent into the most profitable mold, a lover who doesn’t easily fit the plan for fame and fortune – beauty has it all, including a charming young star, Gracie Marie Bradley, like the beauty of the film’s title, a woman who is naively sure of her fate despite all the forces that hold her back.

Yet Beauty, set in the 1980s and which bears more than a vague resemblance to Whitney Houston’s real-life story, is never a gel. The opening of the film introduces us to Beauty and traces the dynamics of her family: her father (Giancarlo Esposito) is bullying and verbally abusive towards his two brothers, but he adores her, although his love for her has certain expectations and a price. Her mother (Niecy Nash) is a talented performer who has spent her life singing in support, never daring to reach stardom. She knows how extraordinarily talented her daughter is and is trying to lead her correctly, even though her envy sometimes confuses the message. She and Beauty’s dad have had severe disagreements about the tough-as-nails manager (Sharon Stone) who is trying to hire Beauty as a client: Beauty’s dad is all for it, but her mother hesitates, fearing that her daughter might be destroyed by the system, and from fame.

There is another complication: Beauty is deeply in love with Jas (Aleyse Shannon) and the two want to build a life together. But Beauty’s father hates Jas and sees her as a deterrent to Beauty’s success. Meanwhile, Jas tries to get Beauty to think for herself, urging her to find a lawyer before signing any contracts, which only feeds her father’s anger.

In all of this, Beauty is something of a ghost, a point that has been repeatedly emphasized by Dosunmu, who offers us many, many Beauty shots looking at the taped performances of his idols – chief among them Mahalia Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald – as we see his face, enraptured but somewhat anonymous, reflected in the glass of the television tube. This is a device with a capital D, a style choice that feels mechanical. We never hear Beauty sing, another stylistic choice but one that makes sense: at one point the stubborn manager of Beauty, played by Stone, pushes her to sing “Over the Rainbow” on her first television appearance to curry favor with white audiences. . She also warns Beauty to keep her relationship with Jas in the background, seeing her as a major obstacle on the road to stardom to stardom.

The point is that for most of those around her, aside from Jas, beauty is more of a ship than a real person, a touching idea if you know something about Houston’s history and how her life was orchestrated. from those around her, at the expense of her own happiness. But Waithe and Dosunmu, the director behind 2013’s independent film Mother of George, a wonderfully crafted drama about infertility, flirt with tense dramatic developments only to shake it off without exploring them. It is often difficult to say exactly what is happening in a scene and why; some characters behave in ways that are convenient for the plot but don’t quite make sense. Dosunmu favors oblique camera angles and swim soft-focus views, again, perhaps, to mimic her confused sense of herself as a Beauty person. But Beauty ends before it has really delved into something important. Her heroine, who we know is headed for trouble, is left stuck in the middle of her own story. When she opens her mouth to sing, no sound comes out and she is stuck in that cycle of voicelessness for eternity.
