Scener, a start-up specializing in virtual “watch parties” that allow viewers in different locations to sync their viewing, has set up a special premiere event for the final two episodes of Netflix’s Stranger Things season four.
The final two oversized episodes of the show’s current season are set to air on Friday, following the premiere of the first seven episodes last month. The virtual clock party will start at 23:30. PT on Thursday, with cast members David Harbour, Brett Gelman, Joseph Quinn and Jamie Campbell Bower participating in a live Q&A video. Netflix Geeked host Terri Schwartz is also scheduled to appear. There is no cost for the event, although attendees will of course need access to a Netflix subscription.
The first part of the fourth season has already got off to a record start and the series is well on its way to becoming the biggest English-language series in Netflix history.
After the live Q&A, the eighth and ninth episodes of the season will air. Scener’s technology allows thousands of viewers to attend an observation party, and the company has held similar events for titles like Zack Snyder’s Justice League. In addition to the real-time reactions of their favorite stars on camera, fans can also connect via live chat messages as they stream both episodes via synced playback.
While the party is global, US attendees can also use Scener’s new mobile app to automatically sync their TVs to watch on a bigger screen.
Scener was incubated at RealNetworks before being launched as a standalone company in 2018. It has offices in Los Angeles and Seattle and registered 3 million unique global users as of late 2021.
David Baron, founding executive of Hulu, was hired as Scener’s new CEO last December. In addition to debuting the mobile app, which for now is only available on iOS but will soon add Android functionality, he intends to expand the company’s scope beyond its subscription parties. Scener aims to become a broader browsing resource for consumers trying to find what to watch in a complex streaming market.
