A strong storm moving west across the mountains and upper Midwest, with far-reaching impacts on the Gulf of Mexico, will bring blizzard conditions to the north and potential tornadoes to the south.
The storms, which threaten damaging winds and tornadoes, will develop Monday afternoon from Houston, Texas to Shreveport, Louisiana, building up through the afternoon and intensifying Monday evening.
The storms will develop ahead of a cold front that will move into southeast Texas late Monday night into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
More than 3 feet of snow fell in California’s Sierra Mountains over the weekend. Up to 7.5 inches of snow fell per hour in the Sierras on Saturday, according to the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab.
Sixteen states are under winter and/or wind warnings, and a winter storm is expected to bring near-storm conditions to the upper Midwest on Monday and Tuesday.
A winter storm warning has also been issued for Salt Lake City, Utah, for Sunday, with forecasts calling for 4 to 6 inches of snow.

Snow arrives in Denver, Colorado around midnight, with 3 to 4 inches expected and up to a foot of snow in Vail and possibly more than 2 feet of snow in southwestern Colorado.
The Mogollon Rim in east-central Arizona is expecting heavy snowfall Sunday with rates that could approach more than 3 inches per hour.
More than a foot of snow and winds in excess of 40 mph are possible Monday and Tuesday in Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota, which could lead to driving conditions and power outages.
The ice event will begin Monday afternoon and continue throughout the day, with snow falling and covering the ice Tuesday morning.

Ahead of the storm, temperatures are expected to climb into the 60s in the East and Midwest, with several locations including Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, near record highs.
For Buffalo, that’s almost a reversal from last week, which saw a major winter storm hit the area and other parts of Western New York.
Buffalo was hit by whiteout conditions and freezing temperatures that contributed to dozens of fatalities.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called the Christmas weekend storm the “womb of the century.”
“This will go down in history as the most devastating storm in Buffalo’s long and storied history of battling … many, many major storms,” Hochul, a Buffalo native, said during a morning news conference on Christmas
