The United States and the Kingdom of Morocco released the text of this statement as follows:
The United States and Morocco have co-sponsored the North African Security Seminar (PSI) from December 6-8, 2022, in Tangier, Morocco. The workshop – the first of its kind in the region – demonstrated cooperation and commitment to address the threat of WMD in the region. Over the course of three days, civilian and military leaders from ten governments discussed WMD proliferation, international and domestic legal authorities related to WMD proliferation, and issues related to detention and investigation. suspected WMD materials, their delivery systems, and related components. The event also featured expert presentations, tabletop exercises, and a visit to the Tangier Med port to inspect cargo.
The United States and Morocco also encouraged all non-ratifiers from the Mediterranean and African countries to ratify the PSI and participate in future PSI events.
The PSI was established in 2003 to stop or prevent the transfer of WMD, their delivery systems, and related materials flowing to and from states and non-states of proliferation concern. To date, 107 states have adopted the PSI Statement of Intervention Principles. In doing so, they are committed to taking effective measures to implement WMD-related reforms in accordance with national laws and international obligations, adopting effective mechanisms for rapid information sharing, and strengthening international laws and policies that fitness.
