JAKARTA – On Wednesday (10/19), the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) launched a new initiative to accelerate development in Papua and West Papua, Papua. Collaborative Management of Indonesia Project or “USAID Kolaborasi”.

USAID Kolaborasi is a five-year, $10 million initiative to support Indonesia’s Master Plan for the Advancement of Development for Papua (RIPPP). The plan aims to strengthen cooperation with development partners, businesses and other stakeholders. The program will help the provinces of Papua and West Papua to use Special Autonomous Funds for maximum benefit to the people of Papua and West Papua. Together with Bappenas and local governments in Papua and West Papua, USAID Kolaborasi will improve the quality of public service delivery and improve the capacities of local government agencies to monitor budget allocation and execution, and engage with citizens in Papua and West Papua.

“This new collaboration with Bappenas demonstrates our commitment to support the Indonesian government in realizing its goal of a prosperous Papua region,” said Jeff Cohen, USAID Indonesia Mission Director. “USAID Kolaborasi promotes collaborative governance in Papua and West Papua by improving the capacity of local governments and the engagement of Indigenous Papuans (OAP) in local development.”

Taufik Hanafi, Secretary of the Ministry of PPN/Chief Secretary of Bappenas, stated that strengthening cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and USAID under Kolaborasi will play an important role in mobilizing program and funding resources to focus on achieving development goals in the RIPPP

The United States is committed to working with the government of Indonesia to address major development challenges. USAID looks forward to expanding its close relationship with Bappenas and working with other local partners such as Cendrawasih University and University of Papua to improve the functioning and accountability of governance in Papua and West Papua.

USAID Kolaborasi is just one of many USAID initiatives in Indonesia, showing the extent of engagement between the two countries. USAID supports Indonesia in achieving its goal of effective democratic governance; promote inclusive economic growth; improving management of natural resources and combating the effects of climate change; and strengthen Indonesia’s health system to respond to health security threats such as infectious diseases and pandemics.
