The United States on Saturday said it is reviewing a request for international aid from Haiti, which it says wants a “special force” to deal with the crisis caused by the closure of the country’s main port. .

The US State Department has said that criminals are undermining Haiti’s efforts to stop the spread of cholera.

“In that context, we will review the request of the Government of Haiti in collaboration with international partners and decide how we can increase our support to help address the lack of fuel and security in Haiti,” it said in a statement.

It does not provide details on how the United States can help Haiti address its security challenges.

The Montana Accord, a group of Haitian academics and activists who have been highly critical of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, described his request as an act of rebellion and said foreign forces would make things worse.

“History teaches us that no foreign power has ever solved the problems of any people in the world,” the Montana Convention said in a statement, adding that Haiti instead needs support for its police.

“It is our Haitian police that will be able to permanently solve the problems of insecurity that the Haitian people have.”
