On 6 October, foreign ministers and representatives of the twenty-one countries adhering to the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection met in Lima, Peru to promote a shared response to irregular migration and forced displacement across the country. western hemisphere. The acceding countries reaffirmed their commitment to create conditions for safe, orderly, humane and regular migration and, in line with the three thematic pillars of action of the Los Angeles Declaration: 1) stability and assistance to communities; 2) regular migration and international protection paths; and 3) humane management of migration.
At the Los Angeles Declaration Ministerial Meeting, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced more than $ 240 million in new State Department humanitarian and security assistance to address the immediate factors and root causes of irregular migration, as well as to assist those who are forced to flee. This includes nearly $ 82 million in humanitarian assistance and over $ 160 million in bilateral and regional assistance. Along with nearly $ 575 million in additional humanitarian assistance announced since September 21, the Department of State and USAID announced nearly $ 817 million in new assistance this month in support of our Los Angeles Declaration efforts.
The countries have issued a joint declaration formally launching implementation and announcing national leaders and participation as part of the various action packages that will develop concrete and shared lines of action in the coming year.
Foreign ministers and representatives of the 21 signatory countries presented progress on the commitments made under the Los Angeles Declaration and announced new initiatives and programs.
