Today, the President signed the Presidential Decree on the acceptance of refugees for the fiscal year 2023, setting the goal of accepting refugees at 125,000 for this coming fiscal year. This ambitious goal demonstrates that the United States is committed to rebuilding and strengthening the US Refugee Readmission Program (USRAP), including building capacity, modernizing and streamlining overall operations, and addressing long-delayed claims. The new private sponsorship pilot program will also expand opportunities for communities across the country to participate in welcoming the world’s most vulnerable to the United States, recognizing and building on the tremendous outpouring of interest we’ve seen from the American public in support of our newest neighbors.
Over the program’s history, USRAP has resettled nearly 3.5 million refugees to the United States. The world is now facing unprecedented levels of forced displacement, and the United States continues to lead the international humanitarian response, including increasing resettlement to third countries.
Our refugee admissions program embodies the best of American values and a willingness to help those in need, and will continue to provide access to resettlement as a life-saving, permanent solution.
